Bonjour Tristesse (in French) (French Edition) [Sagan, Francoise] on desertcart.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. Bonjour Tristesse (in French) (French Edition) Review: Deep - Brilliant. Absolutely brilliant. I need some time by myself now, to sit with my emotions stirred up by this book. So simple. And so spot-on. Well done. Review: A really good story written by a 17-year-old. - This is not a sophisticated literary work; it was written by a 17-year-old French girl! But it's well written, a good story and a pleasure to read. I first read it (in English) when I was a teenager and of course identified with the teenager. I later read it in French, in fact taught it in a French IV high school class and the students loved it - vocabulary and language are fairly simple and there's teenage romance involved. Now, rereading it many years later I no longer identify with the teenager but rather with the "older" woman (she's maybe 40?) - and I still really like the book. Read it in French if you can...but it's good in English too. Also, it shows some interesting aspects of French culture of another time. It's dated in some ways but for me that only adds to its charm and interest. I really like this book and find it interesting that it was written by a 17-year-old girl (who later went on to write a significant body of work). I recommend it and only gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because it is rather dated and not great literature.

For English readers, French not that difficult
This will make you question many things about innocence. The young woman is inexperienced sexually but is very advanced in the skills of manipulation.

Did not age well
I was disappointed but not greatly surprised. One has to keep in mind this was published in 1954 and for the times it was probably shocking and offensive to some. I grew up in France, my stepmother who is the most voracious book monster loved Sagan and talked about her often so out of fealty to her I felt it was time to see what the fuss was about. From the opening pages I knew what it was and that it was not my kind of literature. It vaguely reminded me of the "Magus" which I loved so I persevered knowing I was deluding myself. It's a story that needs early fifties French mores to sustain it if one wants to take it seriously. My stepmother was 29 with a petit bourgeois background when she read it and she must have found it liberating as well as titillating. For me it was just a slightly interesting bit of nostalgia, I was only 3 at the time, about a very elite and rare set of people but at least I think I understand why she found Francois Sagan so special.

Sensual, intelligent, highly readable
A classic that I had somehow never gotten around to and very glad that I finally did; very evocative of a certain era and mindset- (and in some ways an enduring one) as well as simply interesting; the character depictions by the main character are incisive and beautifully drawn, as well as subject to shifts in perspective because, as an adolescent, her maturity shape-shifts as she encounters various challenges. The intelligence of the main character is never cloying, but rather deeply interesting, (and of course all the more so as much of the immense popularity of the book is the fascination with Sagan's age when she wrote it (the same as the main character). The story gives one an open door into a certain world, at a certain time, from a certain person. Highly readable, sensuous and evocative.

a moody piece
I read this to practice mon francaise. It was a little hard to follow for a beginner, but the general tone and mood came through.

Pocos libros logran mostrar la humanidad de forma tan impresionante como este. Las zonas grises y la ambivalencia de los seres humanos se refleja de maravilla en esta novela escrita por una joven de 18 años y publicada por primera vez en 1954.

Beautifully written
Very easy to read. I can not believe she wrote that story at eighteen .It is a complicated story of love but I wish she developed some other characters like Anne .I read the French version so you have to be truly bilingual to read it.

The plot is a lovely, juicy, Freudian meladrama - perfect for a holiday read! The narrator's voice is really compelling and full of personality, which is 🍒 on top
