Read the package or visit the manufacturer's web site to see the ratings for this and other connectors. As I read it, it's for solid copper wires from 18 to 12 AWG, and stranded copper wires from 16 to 14 AWG. This is not rated for 'braided wire'. But it is rated for stranded wire, which is commonly used in automotive applications. Note that UL listings which govern US house wiring may be different from the European ratings. Wago is a German company, and these are used around the world.

Can you use a four wire connector for connecting only two or three wires?

Sure. That leaves one or two holes available for future expansion. But a 4-connector will take up more room in your terminal box than a 2-connector, so in that case, a 2-connector for just the 2 wires might be better. (Unless I know for absolute certain I won't be expanding the circuit, I always try to have one extra hole available because it's tougher to remove wires from these than from twist connectors.

I can not get a stranded wire to connect. I push in but it does not connect. What am I doing wrong?

For stranded wire connections, try tinning the stripped wire end with solder first before pushing into the connector. If you only have a few stranded wires, this can still be an efficient way to make your connections.
