Is there any plastic in the stainless steel filter and if so, is it BPA free?

No plastic in the filter, all stainless steel. There is a handle which I believe is BPA-free, but it would never touch the coffee

Do you use soap when you hand wash the filter?

Hello! No need for soap, make sure to clean and rinse right after brewing. This keeps the filter from clogging over time. A simple brush (toothbrushes work great too) will do the trick :)

I want to use a paper filter with this. What size and type of filter should I use?

I know I still need a paper filter to help with reducing the acidity if the coffee. To actually answer your question; I’m now using left over circular shaped filters from a regular coffee pot; but will be ordering the cone shape filters because they fit better. I also recommend using the bleach-free filters, they’re great because I can throw the coffee grounds and filter straight into my compost bin. You will have to use the paper filter on top of the metal mesh unit it comes with; otherwise the paper filter will fall into the portion of the pot that holds the coffee.
