## Description

HGST Enterprise class, 7200 RPM, SATA III 6.0Gb/s hard drive for high-capacity nearline environments, Heavy Duty Enhancing data safety and security To ensure the utmost in data safety and security, the HGST Ultrastar A7K4000 is also available with a bulk data encryption (BDE) option. When enabled, the Hitachi BDE implementation encrypts all data on the drive using a private security key as it is written to the disk, and then decrypts it with the key as it is retrieved, giving users an extreme level of data protection. Unlike softwarebased encryption solutions, the Hitachi BDE implementation is hardware-based, so it doesn’t slow the system down. This technology also speeds up and simplifies the drive re-deployment and decommissioning process. By deleting the encryption key, the data is rendered unreadable, thereby eliminating the need for time-consuming, multi-pattern data overwrite. Delivering industry-leading reliability With a robust fourth-generation mechanical design, HGST Ultrastar A7K4000 is specifically built and tested for the enterprise. The Ultrastar SATA drive family features Hitachi-patented Rotational Vibration Safeguard (RVS) sensor technology, which optimizes drive reliability in multi-drive RAID arrays and rack-mounted systems. Backed by a five-year warranty, the Ultrastar platform has earned Hitachi a reputation among server and storage vendors as a global partner dedicated to delivering the highest quality and reliability in the industry. Applications: Power PC/Workstation Servers CCTV DVR Security & Surveillance Systems NAS (Network Attached Storage) RAID System

Review: Great drive for a great price! - I purchased this drive as a replacement for a "green" barracuda drive initially used as our home network back-up drive, and then as an XBOX 360 external drive, which died just outside of warranty. The drive inside the box died, and after several attempts, the data was unrecoverable. I decided to gamble that the SATA to USB electronics were still good, so I bought this drive as a replacement, and then plan to use it as an external drive for our XBOX One. After formatting the drive using my desktop computer and a SATA cable, it formatted out to where it should for a 3 TB drive. Transfer speeds are right at 50 MB/S, via USB 3.0, and they stay stable during a group of large file transfers totalling around 6 GigaBytes. It's speed is higher and more consistent than the previous drive. While this drive is designed for continuous use in a server, I am expecting many years of trouble-free use from it . While I am not planning to use it to sleep on, it is quiet, and there is no objectionable noise coming from it, either in the Seagate case, or when I had it formatting outside my desktop case. As for heat, it will warm up. However, they are supposed to be good to 60 C, according to the online spec sheet from HGST. I also tried out this drive in a portable drive case, and the results were also favorable. If I need a portable drive, I will go this route instead of purchasing a portable drive. (I initially considered a WD portable drive powered through the 3.0 USB, however, the complaints and failure rates reported seemed high. However, after looking up the specs of the "green" drive this one is replacing 200 hours for MTBF, I can understand the customers grief. After formatting the drive, it was easy to get it to connect, format, and move data from the XBOX One. ****ONE YEAR UPDATE*** Still works great, as it is where we dowonload new games from our Gold Account, and have all our XBOX ONE games and data on it.
Review: For the money you can't beat it! - I do a LOT of gaming (Battlefield, etc.), store a lot of digital information (documents, gifs, jpgs, RAWs, etc.), save music and videos and just use up disk space. I went into this purchase a bit tongue in cheek. I read all of the reviews and researched other reviews on the internet for a reasonable storage expansion option. I arrived at and decided this Hitachi HDD. 3 TB is a good "bump" to my old IBuyPower gaming computer. I upgraded the graphics, the RAM and even added a couple of onboard fans to the computer. I bumped the PSU to 850 and already had two 1 TB internal drives in the beast. My primary was getting filled and was close to being maxed out so I jumped online for a storage unit, nothing more. I poked around looking at some 2TB HDDs and saw this one. I thought I'd take a chance at the price. I ordered it up and it arrived several days before I expected it to. I did a simple install, fired my old computer up and dloaded the latest Windows 10 updates. I rebooted to BIOS and Windows recognized the HGST 3TB HDD. I rebooted and ran a quick scan of the drive... 0 hrs. use at install. From there I went into the settings section of Windows 10 and I formatted it for storage. After formatting the drive I got the better part of 2.9 TB's of usable space. I transferred a lot of programs and files to it and intend on transferring more as time goes on. I'm using it as my default storage (and some ops) now and things are much tidier on the other two drives than they were before this install. My whole machine appears to have sped up and things are simply running much smoother. Before this disk's install I was getting hitches in the dloads and storage events primarily because my available disk space on both 1 TB drives were in the red on one and nearly in the red on the other. Now, things are smooth and fast again. The only knock (and it ain't much) is the occasional clunking I get as the drive reads/writes the info. But, I've had several hdd's do that in the past so it's nothing new to me. The seller was up front about the product, ensured I realized it's a "refurbished" drive and they included a 1 yr. warranty certificate with it. The transaction was painless, it shipped fast, was delivered before it was expected to be, was very well priced, was a simple install and was recognized, formatted and up and running in very little time. The seller, goHardDrive even followed up with me to make sure I received the unit and to ensure I was satisfied. I'm thinking of grabbing another one just to keep around in case one of the older 1 TB HDDs puke on me but I'll set aside some bucks later on for that. My primary is a Western Digital (1 TB) and my old storage is a Seagate (1 TB). I'll probably move all of the files from the Seagate to the Hitachi and pull the Seagate just to keep things tidy. So, if you're kicking around the idea of grabbing one of these Hitachi drives I suggest, for the money give it a go. So far it works for me... it's working very well and I have no reason to believe it won't be working for me anytime soon. In my opinion it's a great bang for the buck and GoHardDrive is a great seller to deal with. Thanks! 06/02/2017 I just thought I'd come back on here and update my comment. I'm loving this HDD. I'm going to be buying another one in the next day or two now that I know they're truly dependable. I just have to make sure the money's in the bank. Thanks again GoHardDrive for the great service and great product.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: does this work as a desktop Mac Pro hdd?**
A: Yes. It's a SATA drive. It will work as one of your internal drives on your Mac Pro. You will only need to format using Disk Utility. Very easy.

**Q: What is the default bytes per sector? I need 4k native sector size of unallocated/non-formatted disk to add mirror raid to existing 4k native drive.**
A: If you reformat the drive when you install it, it should be reformatted to the system which you are using and thus the configuration will be correct.

**Q: Does this work as a laptop hdd? planning to install in a vaio. thank you!**
A: The others are correct, it cannoot be used as an internal laptop hard drive. This, and most internal hard drives can be made to work as an external hard drive using a USB adapter, but there's usually better solutions. Most USB 2.0/3.0 adapters that interface with internal SATA and/or IDE drives draw their power from a 115VAC adapter (regular household plug here in the U.S.) and are primarily intended as a temporary solution for data transfer off a drive that came out of another PC or server.

Having said all that, I have several of these in the 3TB and 4TB size drives (ordered from another Amazon account) which I use primarily for software RAID ("Mirror" drives in Windows Disk Manager terminology), and one I use for multimedia in the laptop with a USB 3.0 IDE/SATA adapter. It's not a very aesthetic solution, but it's cheap, works great, and I can output from the laptop to a large HDTV + stereo amp.

**Q: Work for gaming?**
A: You can absolutely use this to run games and I say this having done so myself. It would be a lie to say this is "incapable" of it, it preforms with my friends SSD's, albeit they aren't modern it's a pretty high-run drive. You can count on it to load fairly quick, It even loads Elden Ring in under 5 seconds for me. Never had an issue with it, but as other reviewers say, it's refurbished so quality may vary. I got this back in 2018 before HGST was bought out by WD.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Economical and performing option for RAID disk; reliability TBD
*by P***B on August 3, 2017*

So far so good. This was to replace a Seagate ST3000DM001 Barracuda drive that had failed. I have had three of those barracudas fail in the past ~6 years or so; it was time to try something different. Since I already had a failed drive I didn't have time to wait too long to replace it while my NAS raid array was operating in a degraded state. I had some concerns about using a different manufacturer's drive as a replacement in case of any incompatibility in the RAID-6 storage array with three of their Seagates, but it has thus far performed flawlessly. I have only had it for a couple months, so I can't speak to the longevity, but if it dies prematurely on me I will update this review. I also had some reservations about this drive being refurbished, but again, thus far it is preforming as expected and seems no worse for the wear (no increased noise levels or other oddities). My unit appears to have been reset so that I cannot see how many hours it has run total in its life before being refurbished and sold to me. All in all, if it continues performing as it currently is, I can easily recommend this as a cost effective option especially when you are needing a commodity drive to fill out or replace a failure in a redundant RAID array.
