Buy the VCI version!
With so many choices on this item, I wanted to let my fellow movie fans know that the disk I chose, the VCI entertainment product, has superior quality picture and sound when compared to versions I've encountered on the internet. I like this film and it's a pleasure to see it presented as it was intended. We all need to leave comments for our fellow film enthusiasts on the quality of individual disks we purchase, especially ones like this public domain release with so many different editions.

I watched this to see handsome Guy Madison, who delivered a solid performance. He was a much better actor than he got credit for and had a beautiful speaking voice. James Craig was also good and so was Barbara Payton. I enjoyed it, but I am also an old movie buff.

The Seige of Atalanta as it really was . . . not
Great cave sequences. Can you imagine? A battery of cannons going up through a cave to an inaccessible mountain top, a good karst mountain with sheer sides like a mushroom. But the Rebs do it and hold up Sherman's advance for several weeks by shooting at his railroad while Sherman's cannons can't range the mountain top. Wow. Then that vandal Sherman blows up the whole mountain until nothing is left but gravel.

Terrible purchase
The picture and sound quality was like watching TV in the country with an antenna during the late 40"s early 50's - very poor! The script and acting was equally poor. After watching for 15 minutes the DVD went into the garbage.

DVD "Drums in the Deep South" with Guy Madison (?)
This purchase turned out to be a big mistake. Guy Madison was supposed to be the star but it turned out that he was in the first 10 minutes and the last 10 minutes only. A really crappy film. Sorry I bothered.

The plot follows along the lines of one of the best World War II movies
It was an entertaining movie. The plot follows along the lines of one of the best World War II movies, "Objective Burma", starring Errol Flynn. As I got further into the movie I could begin telling what the next scenes were going to be about. As I said, "Objective Burma" was one of my favorite WWII movies so watching the retling of that story watching "Distant Drums" was a pleasure. I would rate this movie just below 4 stars.

Good Civil war story spoilt by poor quality copy.
The film purchased was a very poor quality copy, almost to the point of being unwatchable. According to IMDb many copies of this film were made as it ran out of copyright quickly which was not renewed. Hence there were many copies made, and the one that I recieved looked like a copy of a copy. This was a very POOR product. The seller really must do better to check the copies that it sells.

AVERAGE B MOVIE
As a child I saw this film at our local Odeon in 1951. It was a second feature and I was curious to see if I would still enjoy it. Watching it fifty eight years on, it still was quite a good yarn, but the acting left a lot to be desired. It was allright for the price, but the colour was not very good, I dont think it had been remasterd. As with a lot of dvds using the 4.3 ratio it appeared to be cropped at the sides losing some of the picture, although this can vary with different tvs and I have not tried it on another tv yet. It was allright for a trip down memory lane. It is advertised as as region1 but the copy I recieved was region free.

Drums in the Deep South
I remember this film from childhood and always wanted to see it again. I had forgotten the title but came across it whilst searching for something else. On receipt I found the quality of the recording to be abysmal and was quite disappointed.
