If you are hanging the same size lumber, the bottom reference foot will make the tops the same. If you are hanging different dimension lumber, (2x6 joist to a 2x10 ledger wouldn’t work,but a 2x10 joist to a 2x6 ledger would **Q: What about the inevitable variations in joist thickness?** A: 99% of the time your joist will fit fine, and some may be snug. Thanks again. **Q: The hangers are designed to be held and set in place with one hand and the points at the top of the hanger are hammered in then shot with the gun.** A: In deference to your question, yes that is how it works. There is a small learning curve as to what tools to have where while you are hanging them. I have found that no two carpenters install joist hangers the same way.
