The diameter for the handle is 1.1/2" **Q: What other type of handle could be used besides the over priced one recommended ?** A: I would go to your local hardware store and see whether they have a handle in hickory that fits, you might carefully take the hoe blade/head along to try it out on some of the available handles. the important thing is that it be both strong and also have a widening taper toward the top end to prevent the hoe-head from flying off. I've worked with this type of tool in an agricultural occupation in the past and if you can find a handle that allows you to slide it through the eye on the hoe-head and that's wide enough at the business end of the handle to prevent fly-off, you'll be in good shape, but there's never any guarantee and always observe all safety precautions. **Q: What is the exact dimension of this hoe?** A: Yes, I just measured mine. The cutting edge is exactly 8.375 " (widest point), and exactly 8.750 "(tallest point), as measured from the back side, outer top side of the eye hole to the cutting edge, as it rolls. Sharpened the edge, but haven't had the need to use it yet! Seems to be a quality piece with no noted casting flaws, unlike some of the crap I've also purchased that was made in china (it doesn't deserve capitilization)! I hope this helps.
