I was delighted when I found out that Lego were going to ...
I was delighted when I found out that Lego were going to bring back Bionicle, which had been a major part of my childhood. I had followed the series since its inception in 2001, and the toy line captured my imagination and kept me entertained for hours on end. These sets pay homage to their predecessors, being new incarnations of the original six heroes. I decided to get these for collector's purposes, but I'll review them fairly for what they are.Pros:- Full standard set of articulation: ankles, knees, hips, shoulders, wrists, elbows and neck.- Additional articulation in the shoulder armour; two per shoulder.- Return of the gear functions that were present in the early years of Bionicle, but absent in later generations. The new gear functions feature friction, meaning that the character can have static poses without its limbs flailing about. This character features it in both arms.- A new mask which closely resembles the original incarnation.- The new CCBS building system which allows for a more fleshed-out, complete look.- Good overall colour scheme, featuring gold and red.- Dual swords which can be combined to form a surf board, much like the second incarnation of this character but on a much grander scale.- The plastic is very high grade, much like the original run (if not better). Later generations had noticeably lower grade plastic that was prone to chipping and wear.Cons:- The friction gears limit playability. In its original run, the joints were loose enough to allow for children to use the toys in a game where you would try to knock the masks off one another. This is intended for this new run, but the stiff gears limit this.- The masks are not fitted via a traditional axle, and instead have a new connector that is incredibly loose. This will cause the mask to fall off constantly if you try to adjust the head. This is intended to compensate for the friction gears, but doesn't work too well.- Friction joints in hips and ankles mean the legs are more likely to fall apart than articulate properly.- The cost of the set is not appropriate for a set of this size. In its previous run, a Bionicle set with this price tag would have been a full scale titan set such as Brutaka, which is considerably larger than this set.Overall I recommend this set to both collectors and parents looking to get their kids a nice gift.

It's Tahu, Jim; but not as we know him...
The first thing I noticed about Tahu is that he's a lot bulkier than the original one. The lava boards/swords are probably the best things about him, and the smaller 'hack and slash' katanas that fit on his back are also very neat. The gear function is also very effective and makes him good for posing. The skull spider and the golden mask are nice surplus items that add a little bit to the set. Overall it's pretty good and if you have nostalgia for the original Bionicle toys or just like something that combines elemental powers with mechanical builds, then it's worth checking out. Only thing I will say is that the back of his calves are pretty open and not covered up particularly well, and there are two ball joints either side of his chest that aren't used at all. I'm also unsure about the new mask system; it just seems a little too fragile in that it falls off too easily, and the mask itself doesn't have quite the same simplicity in it's shape like the classic masks did. Overall, it's great to play with and I think if you've got a 6-12 year old then it will be right up their alley. At £12 the price here also isn't too high. As much as I like this I'm not sure that I'm going to splash out on the other Toa- sorry, "Masters", or much of the future sets. (At almost 20 I'm too old now...)

Great for kids and collectors
I have loved Bionicle my whole life and I still do to this day So seeing them back has made me happy, As a collector these figures look great and have a lot of playability for kids for example you can swap the weapons about and attach them to other parts of the figure! The instructions are simple but some adult assembly may be required But once the building is over kids will have ours of fun posing these figures as well as fighting the evil skull spider that's included with it!But if you are an adult like me then these figures will look great standing side by side on your shelf ready for battle!

An Old Fan's Delight
Having not carried on my love for the Bionicle series into it's spiritual successor of Hero Factory, the news of its return blew me away. More so when I learned that the original six Toa were being re-imagined for it. And they don't disappoint. Using every innovation the company implemented in the last five years, this re-imagining of Tahu contains everything that was great about the original special, topping it off with some incredibly nifty new points that delight and making me excited for the other five and everything to come. Sure to delight new and old fans alike.
