Many times I hated not just this book
The course was hard. Many times I hated not just this book, but life itself. Ripping the hair off my arm seemed more merciful. Frankly this course should be used as a CIA torture device. Or a way to drive people insane. It really is that awful. Unless you are deviant who enjoys intricate things with no right answers just for the sake of fun debate. Blah ha ha. 🤓😜Either way, don't expect any book on this topic to be a dummy's guide. Stay at a Holiday Inn express. Maybe you'll understand it. This book is likely as good as it's gonna get to simplify this course. My book had about a thousand post its with notes. Why? Well you know the image of a dead horse? Yeah they beat it INTO the ground making explanations. And when you're doing, you're wondering where the day went. I can almost speed read and twenty pages took me two days. That's about a chapter. Why? Well I'd read an except, eat massive chocolates, roam the house like a prison, banged my head, dreamed with my eyes open....Still, the authors tried. One book. One course... You haven't learned a thing. But you can sit and listen to professors have a discussion and understand 10%. You can read a scholarly article and say, hey, I recall that word. I don't know how the heck they did the math, but I know they have nifty computers to do that quantitative research. Hahahahahaha.Read it anyway. If you decide you want a DSW, you'll do research til you croak. Or if you desperately want an answer to some complex puzzle, you'll have to align with a senior social worker and do this. You'll only learn this by doing. And even then, a lifetime of doing and you won't perfect it. But you gotta start somewhere. So yes, I hated this book, mainly because the work was just impossibly hard. But that wasn't the books fault. That was the fault of my hard head, exhaustion and difficult concepts. Now that I'm on the other side, I'll hide the book awhile, forget the agony of it, and enjoy reading scholarly articles with more insight and a frame of reference. I can't judge the authors on the material, only their take on it, and it wasn't bad. I don't know anything about anything still, but I can pretend as if I had stayed at the holiday inn express.

Surprisingly good
I had to read this book for a college SOC class, and I was really surprised at how good the book actually was. The book is broken down into articles, not chapters, so it is much easier to read. Also, there are many, many topics covered throughout the book that have given me much insight on things that I was once ignorant of before taking my SOC class and reading this book. I rented it, and after I was done reading it I really wished I had bought it.

An eye-opening, easy read
A very focused look at race, class, and gender issues in today's society, both in the US and abroad. Very eye-opening. The book reads very simply; Its prose isn't difficult, unlike other textbooks, and you could even read it outside of class. The questions are very well-thought out and engaging. This book changed the way I think. I only wish I had bought it instead of renting it, because I would have read it all the way through!

It's nice content
So the content of the book is good, but the condition of the book isn't like new as it is described. Of course that's bound to happen since my book is a rental, it definitely has some wear and tear. It also has some highlighting and writing within the book which can be a bit distracting when trying to read. Just a heads up if you are renting it.Update:In the middle of the book it's ripped, just noticed after reading a bit more.

It was insiteful, though a little too deep for the English 103 (Critical & Argumentitve Writing) Course
This was a book I needed for my English 103 (Critical & Argumentative Writing) I was less than impressed with the text book as was my class and Professor. Sadly we ended up reading more articles outside of the textbook than in it. I will say on certain subject matters, the reading was insightful. However overall most of the readings were heavy for the context of this English Class. This book is broken up into sections. Within each section are stories, written by various Authors, which does make for an easy read, unless the subject matter is in depth.I wish you luck if you have to use this text for your class. It wasn't for me!

Thoroughly interesting and insightful book of short personal essays. ...
Thoroughly interesting and insightful book of short personal essays. The essays really let the reader see things from the perspective of the author, creating empathy for the author and making the reader think about things in a whole new way. Even though I need it for a text book, I think this book would be interesting for anyone to read.

I used this textbook for a sociology class this semester and it was great. Very informative and the essays are well written. It came in great condition and getting it here was cheaper than at my universities bookstore

Nothing but Opinions
I bought this book because it was a class requirement (masters program). I assumed it would be a scholarly publication; however, it was nothing but a collection of editorial opinions of the authors. As an example, the suggested "fix" for the illegal immigration problem, as offered by the authors, was pass the "Dream Act." This book wasn't filled with anything scholarly, it was filled with extreme-far-left opinions.
