WORKS GREAT--as long as it works.
The carpet sweeper motor of the first Hoover Cyclonic that I purchased died just within the year-warantee. Hoover honored the warantee by replacement. The replacement worked about a year until the main motor died. So, I've ordered a third. Why? Because the Hoover Cyclonic works so well, when it works. PROS > It is truly light-weight and almost a pleasure to use. > A switch selects between simple vac (ideal for hardwood floors etc.) and carpet. ... In carpet mode it does a good job of picking up surface particles from low-pile carpets. ... In normal vac mode it picks up even the lightest particles without blowing them around the room. > Reaches under furniture well and very easily. > No bags or filters to replace or wash---just dump out the container. ... No bags or filters to get clogged-up to reduce the vacuum power. > Easily partially disassembles to clean clogs---not common, but if you suck up a paper towel or a big wad of cat hair, it is possible. > Not rechargeable, so you don't have to wait for the battery to charge, nor replace an expensive battery after a few months. ... The good long cord stows easily ... Almost certainly more powerful than a comparable battery-powered vac. CONS > Since it is bagless, it isn't hypoallergenic. > After a few months use (once a week), the beater-brush made a horrid screeching sound. I was able to fix it by partially disassembling the lower unit and dripping lubricating oil into the beater-brush bearings. > Although the carpet mode does a good job of cleaning the surface of a low-pile carpet, it doesn't do the deep-beating of a large carpet vacuum. Fortunately, I don't have any deep-pile carpets. I use the Hoover Cyclonic for routine floor and carpet cleaning, and my big Hoover WindTunnel Anniversary Upright Vacuum, Self-Propelled, Bagged, U6485900 for serious carpet cleaning. > Not very versatile. It cleans floors and low-pile carpets, period. You need something else for furniture, drapes, attics, etc. I seriously suggest a shop-type vacuum such as Shop-Vac 9650600 3.0-Peak HP Pro Series Wet or Dry Vacuum, 6-Gallon . A shop-vac can do virtually everything that a Hoover Cyclonic can't, and the price will surprise you. In addition to floors, draperies walls, ceilings, attics, and really filthy basements, a shop-vac can even vacuum up water from your carpet if you have a flood, or blow up your air mattress for your guests. > Click on โStoneyโ just below the product title to see my other reviews, or leave a comment to ask a question.

Awesome Vacuum at a Great Price
I purchased this vacuum as I recently moved into a new one bedroom apartment. Some of the features I was most concerned with were: (a) a vacuum that would work on bare and carpeted floors; (b) affordability; and (c) the ability to pick up pet hair yet also pick up larger things (such as cereal that I've spilled, etc). This vacuum does all those things and more! It has a lot of suction power and easily picks up everything I've had on my carpet. Another thing that I like is that it is super light! I fractured my spine a few years ago, but I can easily lift this to take it to the upper level of my apartment and use it to vacuum the stairs (and if I can lift it after recovering from a spinal fracture, so can you!). Finally, it is easily maneuverable. It turns corners very easily and slides under my furniture and under the cabinetry in the kitchen. Disadvantages to choosing this model: 1) To my knowledge, this vacuum does NOT have a HEPA filter in it. This isn't an issue for me as I currently own a separate HEPA filter, but it might be for you. However, when I ran the vacuum without using a HEPA filter, the air quality in my home didn't bother me at all (so I don't think that the vacuum not having a HEPA filter is a big deal). 2) There are no hoses/attachments for cleaning things like furniture. If this is important to you, you may want to get a different vacuum OR get a smaller, cordless vacuum to clean your furniture. Overall, I think this vacuum is a great buy. It isn't heavy or bulky and really gets the job done. I'd definitely recommend it!

Awesome for light to medium duty cleaning
Loved this vac while it worked! I have two dogs and two cats, and occasionally board dogs at my home, so this vac had its work cut out for it. It's been almost two years since I bought it and today I found that it no longer sucks. I wish it lasted longer, but as I mentioned, we had given it a job bigger than it was designed for so I guess two years isn't so bad for what we paid. I really liked this vac because it's slim and inconspicuous so I didn't feel too bad leaving it tucked in the corner of my living room, and it was fairly powerful yet light and quiet at the same time. It picked up a ton of dust/dirt/hair/fur, but since the canister is kind of small I had to empty it once or twice per room (to be fair, I don't vacuum nearly as often as I should). I guess it slowly lost its suction over time, but I never really noticed a big change until today when it did not pick up anything at all. Thinking back, though, the vac was definitely more powerful in the beginning and then later it required more passes to clean the carpet. This may be due to the fact that we did not clean the foam filter as often as we should have. However, I have a hunch that the thing that finally killed my vac was baking soda. I had sprinkled baking soda over my carpets to help deodorize, and it was after I attempted to vacuum that up that the hoover finally quit. So, I don't know for sure if this is what broke my vac, but my previous vacuum met its demise in a similar situation so I wouldn't rule it out. Bottom line - if you have a light to medium amount of cleaning to do and your floors/carpets don't get too disgusting, this vacuum is fantastic and will probably last you a while. However, if you have a house full of animals/kids and/or don't clean as often as you should, perhaps a heavier duty one will work better for you. *EDIT 8/11/13 - Turns out the thing was just clogged. My husband took it apart and removed a gnarly knot of crud and now the vac seems to work again. Score!

Whoa! This really works.
Okay--I bought this in March, about eight months ago, and it malfunctioned in November. You can see the full story below, if you are interested. I checked, and the vacuum was still under warranty. You can search right on Hoover's webpage for a local repair shop, and there was one literally five minutes from my house. The repair shop asked for the vacuum and a copy of the receipt, which was easy to print out from Amazon. The part they needed to fix it wasn't available, so Hoover sent me an ENTIRELY NEW VACUUM--completely free. No shipping to, no shipping from, no service charge, nothing. I had a new vacuum in a week. I used it tonight for the first time, and it's AMAZING. Really amazing. I would have filmed how much stuff filled up the reservoir, but I was embarrassed. :) From tonight's experience, I realize now that it must have had a clog/defect since the first time I used it. Since it worked some, and I haven't vacuumed in eight years (husband insisted on doing it), I didn't realize how well it *could* work, and our beige carpeting hides a lot, apparently. This new one is AMAZING. I can't tell you how much it got up, dust and a ton of dog hair that I didn't even realize was on the floor. It's fantastic. My initial review (based on the story below) was one star. However, duds do happen, and when I realized that I had a dud, the warranty covered everything and was very easy to deal with. No shipping, no cost, conveniently located repair shop. And the replacement works like crazy. I considered giving it four stars due to the initial dud, but decided against it. Everyone makes mistakes, and it's how you recover from them that counts, I figure. Hoover could not have recovered better. My new review is 5 stars. A vacuum that will do everything in your house for $72? I highly recommend it. P.S. Do keep the instructions. You can dump the reservoir, which I prefer very much to vacuum bags, but there are a few buttons to get it out. Not difficult to do, and it's nice and secure when you use it, but the instructions help. I may not have realized, for example, that the center pipe comes out quite easily. If I hadn't had the directions, I would have not realized it removed at all. ================================= I was so excited about this vacuum. I had just separated from my husband and needed something light and not too expensive to vacuum my new house. My new rental had linoleum and carpet, so I thought it would be perfect, one vacuum that could do both. I bought it March 7th. A week ago, in October, it started making terrible noises. The motor got very hot, and I shut it off and called a very nice repairman. He had to take off seven screws to get to the innards, and remove the brush and its belt, and then he pulled out--no exaggeration--at least four full, packed handfuls of dog hair. Now, my dog is a Lab mix. Her hair isn't very long. I also don't vacuum that often, so I would estimate that it began clogging FROM THE FIRST USE. I should have realized what was happening when the reservoir wasn't filling up with a lot of dirt, but I just didn't notice--one woman and one dog didn't track in that much, I figured, when she leaves her shoes at the door. Now, it runs again, but one of the two modes doesn't work and overall its power is damaged because of running it while clogged, even though I did shut it off before it ruined the motor completely. A vacuum ought to be able to deal with one short-haired dog's hair. This one didn't. And if it can't (although why make a vacuum that can't deal with dog hair?), at least make the area that might clog easy to get to. Nope. I'd return it, but I can't. So, I advise you to avoid!

Dropping the rating from 5 to 1 stars
The review that follows this edit was valid when I reviewed the vac at the beginning. It was wonderful and I was delighted. Yesterday, however, the vac stopped picking anything up. There is no suction whatsoever. I tried everything to see if something was stuck but no results. I re-read the reviews and saw that others had experienced the same problem. There seemed to be no point in calling Hoover: they would either have done nothing or told me to bring it to a service man, and there are none in the area. Also, I paid much more for it than it is now. I finally gave up and ordered a different brand of stick vac. I love having one just for quick pick ups, I will never buy Hoover again; I think the brand has gone down hill. First review: I have owned a Hoover Flair for years and loved it. After dropping it quite a few times, however, I needed it a new one (one of the problems was that it didn't stand on its own and fell over). I looked for the same vac, but this one was the updated version. I checked ratings first, but it was not among the rated stick vacs on the internet, so I looked at those first. Then I looked at this vac and decided to take a chance because my last one was so great. Surprise...this one is better. I am almost happy that the old one broke. It glides much more easily over the floors, fits farther under furniture (still not all the way, but enough), stands upright without falling over, is easy to use, and , best of all, still does a great job on both my wood floors and my low piles area rugs. It seems lighter and might even have more suction. The dirt cup is very easy to remove and replace as is the center portion that pulls in dirt. The filter is washable. I am completely happy with my purchase. For any of you who are dog owners, if you have any sort of vacuum which sometimes has that "doggy odor", just sprinkle dried sage or rosemary on the floor, vacuum it up, and the scent is really nice.

Best little vac I've ever owned
Works better than my $500 Dyson. Despite the 32 reviewers giving this little baby one star, for the price I thought it wouldn't kill me to try it because I'm really fed up with spending hundreds and hundreds on vacuums that suck in all the wrong ways!!! I have polished concrete, hardwood floors, and lots of wool carpets - it has two settings, bare floors and carpet. It's lightweight, which I really love because my Dyson weighs about a ton so taking it up and down the stairs is well... just forget about it. I also just built a beautiful new set of open tread stairs out of doug fir beams and we are a shoe free household, so the floors are kept very clean. Using this little thing on the stairs is quick, lightweight, and I don't worry (like I did with the one ton Dyson) about having to drag it up and down, making marks or dents in my new stairs. I am going to order another (I have a large house) and get rid of the other half baked and expensive ones that are taking up WAY too much space in my cleaning closet. Just remember, for $89, I wasn't expecting a whole lot. It's mostly plastic, it snapped together quickly and was plugged in and running in 3 minutes. If it lasts a year, it will be worth it. The body is very lightweight, so it is easy to use, but with rough handling, dropping, and some regular household abuse, I could see it breaking. For the meantime though, the suction on this thing is pretty unbelievable and I'm a freak about vacuum cleaners and I couldn't be happier with my purchase.

Detailed Review
My old Dirt-Devil stickvac died a few months ago, so I went out to find a replacement. I have a large Dyson vacuum for heavy duty work, but needed something light, portable, and corded (which Dyson does not make). After reading a lot of reviews online, I decided on this Hoover, and after a few weeks of use, these are my points on its performance: QUALITY It's sturdy, well made, and the plastic parts feel strong. No gimmicky knobs to break. When you tilt it forwards to stand it up, it clicks into place and you know it won't fall over. It's also fairly light (have had lighter ones though), and easily maneuverable. SUCTION For the heft of it, I was expecting more suction. It does a great job with dust bunnies and hair, but larger and heavier pieces are a problem. Cat litter is very hard to do, and you have to make several passes to get it all. My Dyson easily picks up coins and small rocks, so it seems Hoover has some work to do in this department. BRUSHROLL This feature is pretty useless, it turns, you can hear it whiz up a storm, but it barely makes a difference. When I tested it on several different carpets in the house, it barely disturbed the pile and left just barely visible track marks. Most stickvacs, however, do not have a brushbar, so I guess it's kind of a bonus. Just don't expect your carpet to get a thorough cleaning. DIRT CUP Although there are no bags to change, the dirt cup is not that easy to deal with. The release latch is finicky, so sometimes, you have to physically open the bin yourself, instead of it popping open over the garbage can. Most problematic is that long hair gets tangled around the central shaft of the cyclone system, and the only solution is to get your hand into it and dig it out. Gross. Never had this problem with my larger Dyson. VARIOUS Cord length is good, although an extra 2 feet would be appreciated. The filter is washable, and you have to clean it every few uses unfortunately. Hair also gets stuck against it, which I'm guessing reduces suction, and is due to the cyclonic system not spinning everything out of the air before it hits the filter. Overall, it's a decent vacuum for the price, if you use it what it was intended for - dust and hair on smooth floors (tile, linoleum, wood). No miracles on carpets, and it's definitely not intended to be your only vacuum. Good for quick jobs when a large vac would be a pain to take out.

Great on carpet + lightweight + long cord + quiet = perfect vac!
This is my 4th purchase of this vacuum. I loved my 1st one so much I bought a 2nd one for my friend who has 3 dogs. Bought another one for a friend having surgery to replace a much heavier bagless vac that was horrible. I just purchased a 4th one to replace the 1st one I (intentionally) left at my mom's house. I recently moved to a house that has a lot of carpet so my trusty wood floor dust mop doesn't get a lot of use. I have two cats so keeping up with the pet hair is a concern. I also hate vacuuming. That's why I always had wood floors and leather furniture...makes cleaning easy Peasy. Well, I'm still living with the carpet and dragging out my heavy canister vac was getting old fast. I found this terrific lightweight yet powerful vac. I wanted a stick vac for frequent mid week cleaning but I knew it needed to be corded to have enough power. I needed one that would handle hardwoods, tile, and carpet equally well. Other similar vacs that got great reviews also stated that they didn't do a great job on carpet. I want to personally thank everyone that specified in their reviews of this vac and others how well carpet was cleaned...that was exactly the info I was looking for and this vac has never disappointed me. Besides doing a great job with pet hair and carpet, it is relatively quiet and has a nice, long cord. I still have to drag my Big Bertha canister out to get ALL the way under the sofa and beds since the bagless cannister on this one prevents getting more than about 6 inches under low furniture, but that's no big deal. This vac is pretty perfect and I never thought I'd write those words. Thanks so much Hoover!

Well have one of these in Florida for my lanai these things suck up dirt really well surprised how much and they work just as well on hardwood. I know people read these reviews all they want to know is how it works where it works how good it works. It works well on hardwood floors or hard surface floors. I works great on carpets as well great suction you would be surprised on your first pass over with it how much dirt your get in the cup. this is meant for light cleaning not really meant to replace your bigger heavier vacuum . You can use it every day if you choose to do so my goal I to have this light one up stairs do my hardwood and area rugs that is it. Before I had a hoover over the shoulder vac heavy and awkward you have to put a strap over your shoulder and not light still have it but hope I do not have to use at all or very little . My only complaint I wish that it went lower to the ground meaning it does not fit under my coffee end tables so you need a dust mop to get under there. And it does swivel but only a little it does not have a full swivel head . So those are my only little complaints . But I over look them because it does such a great job. And is light weight is key. Like when you need to do that quick clean up when someone is coming you want to be able to crab something light and easy so it does not wear you out and has power and does hardwood and carpet. This little gem is great lots of power does the job if there is any thing negative on here they are being picky. It is a low cost stick vacuum and does and amazing job. I have one in Florida was shocked how well it works and I now have one here in Niagara falls Canada .

I would not recommend for anyone having any pet hair
We purchased this for light clean up between heavy vacuuming. We used it on bare floors and area rugs. Other reviews are correct when mentioning the frequency of emptying the dirt cup....and boy is it messy. It does pick up crumbs on bare floors very well. It didn't do too well on the very flat pile area rugs. We have some dog hair and it continually clogged the inside workings of the cup. I would not recommend for anyone having any pet hair. We ended up returning it because the clip to hold the dirt cup kept coming undone and hence the dirt cup kept falling off. OK, so here is the rundown as to whether you want this vacuum or not. If you want an underpowered vac which will only be used for quick jobs this might be for you. You know that game you play of "I'd rather go over the piece of garbage on the floor several more times rather than just pick of up?' You'll play that game a lot more with this vacuum than if you just got the real thing. It feels pretty cheap and while its very light, it feels light in that bad way of lacking substance and durability. Having said all that, here is my list of pros for if you really are in the market for a small, lightweight, simple vacuum. It has a switch to go between no brushroll (hard floors) and brushroll (carpets) and the brushroll works decently. Its nice and simple to empty. The cord is decently long so you can get a good sized area. Its very light so nothing you wouldn't mind grabbing out of the closet for a quick cleanup. It has a reasonable (but not great) low profile which can get halfway under furniture. (Expect to be able to vacuum about a foot and a half under the edges of a low bed, but definitely not getting to the middle.)

Works well for me!
The corded Hoover Cyclonic Stick Vacuum came quickly (2 days). It was very easy to put together (3 parts). I plan to use it on floors, not carpeting. I tried it on a carpeted area, but it was not as efficient as my regular vacuum. I have only used it once so far, but it picked up dust and debris very nicely. Much better suction than the rechargable stick vacuum that I am replacing. Very easy to empty. Easy to manoeuvre and lightweight (under 8 lbs). The 20ft cord is just right. I am very pleased with this product so far.

Great value, light weight, moves well and even works well on carpet! Impressive!
Wasn't sure what to expect for a light weight, inexpensive stick vac, but this one is really awesome! It moves well on floor or carpet, doesn't destroy area rugs, has good suction, and does a good job on carpet! It doesn't have tools of course but I would highly recommend this vacuum for main area vacuuming, then you just have to haul out the heavy one once in a while to use the tools to get the corners. Super pleased with this product!

good vacuum ETA: Not so much anymore.
It's a nice light vacuum that sucks stuff up well, but the cord could be a bit longer. 15 feet is not quite long enough to do my hallway without unplugging it and moving it down to another outlet. ETA: It's 11 months on, and the vacuum has been acting up for the last month, and yesterday the motor started to burn out. Smells like burned wires, and was smoking a bit. It was sucking stuff up, I kept the filter clean, and made sure there were no clogs. It is very disappointing, as my last Hoover vacuum lasted us 27 years, and this one didn't even make a year. I'll try customer service, but reading the reviews on here, I don't hold out much hope.
