Why are these gold plated? It's an optical cable, not an analog/electrical cable.

Same reason some people get gold frames on their eyeglasses, I guess. *shrug* Yes, these are optical, and the whole thing that matters is clear delivery of the light that gets flashed into one end and seen at the other. Unless something ends up obscuring that hole in the end, the choice of material for the connector is largely irrelevant. The optical fiber inside and the lining of the cable sleeve are what matter.

Does this bluerigger digital optical audio toslink cable (10ft, fiber optic, aluminum shell, 24k gold-plated) rated for dolby atmos

No, the Toslink standard does not provide enough bandwidth for Dolby Atmos. The only cable that currently supports Atmos is HDMI.

Will this fit a Sony sound bar?

if your sound bar has an optical connection it will work. You need an optical connection to connect each end of the cable to.

If my smart blueray disc player has both hdmi and toslink connections, is there any advantage to using both? or is hdmi alone good enough>

HDMI is a preferred choice for audio. Unlike HDMI, TOSLINK does not have the bandwidth to carry the lossless versions of Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD Master Audio, or more than two channels of PCM audio. For more questions or concerns, please visit us on our website or on our Facebook page.
