A charming treat
I came across this film because we loved Steve Carell as Michael Scott in The Office (the US version - by the way, much more fun than the UK version). I can see why some reviewers, knowing Steve Carell's work, might have struggled with this but if you are prepared to open your mind and accept him in something a bit different then this is a real treat! All of us - my husband right down to our daughter (aged 12) loved it.It is set over a fairly short period of time (say less than a week) in Autumnal coastal New England - every scene is a joy in both the dialogue and scenery - charming, witty family banter with none of the usual crudeness which is so commonplace in adult films. The scenery is lovely - atmospheric (out of season New England coastal town, large battered old house etc). The soundtrack is fantastic - never heard of the Norweigan guy who wrote most of the music but it just enhances what is a really lovely film.Steve Carell is a revelation - of course we all know he is fantasic at comedy but here he gives a charming performance as a widower embarrassing his teenage children. Juliette Binoche is also charming. And the supporting actors including Dianne Wiest and Emily Blunt are great too.If you are looking for thrills and spills - sex and special effects - forget it but for those of us who love softer, quieter but nevertheless charming films then this is for you! Highly recommended.

Very surprising. In life you can only prepare to be surprised....
What a great surprise this film turned out to be. I don't know of anyone who had seen it and it wasn't greatly advertiesed when on release at the cinema. I bought it purely because of Steve Carell and then was slightly disappointed when it came and was only rated PG. I thought, it can't be that funny if it's only a PG, there won't be any adult humour. How wrong I was. For me, this made the film better - a kind of Little Miss Sunshine minus the swearing. Carell is brilliant in this serious role and still brings a barrel of laughs with his awkardness and dance skills. Cook is awesome with his singing and just has the ability to make you laugh whenever he is on screen.I would say this film isn't for you if you enjoy your comedy with a lot of slap stick and insults. This is not your typical Anchorman or 40 Year Old Virgin kind of film. The humour is more subtle.

This will make you smile - inside and out :)
It is a rare thing these days to find a gem of a movie like this:* The humour is funny, not crude.* The concept of family is portrayed in a very positive light, not negatively.* The reality of a single parent looking for love is not washed over with some wishy-washy sappy romantic nonsense that ignores how the children feel.* The characters are sweet, believable and yet quirky* The story is engaging and endearing* Both guys and girls should appreciate this one. The guys will laugh and the girls might cry. This is definitely one of my favourite films of all time. I love the simplicity, the reality and the positiveness of the film. A great movie to watch with the family (there is a shower scene but it's funny and there isn't any visible nudity). Both Steve Carrell and Juliette Binoche are excellent, but they are surrounded by a stellar cast as well.At the price here on Amazon, definitely one to be bought. I am sure you will watch it more than once and it will always make you smile - inside and out.Hope that helps :)

Something different from Carell
Being a fan of Steve Carell I decided it was time to check out a few more films of his and so picked up Dan in Real Life as part of the collection I was going to check out. The film sees Carell playing Dan, a man who is a widower raising 3 daughters on his own but when he takes his daughters on their family retreat with the rest of the family but when he meets a woman in a bookstore he could never imagine just how much his life will be changed and just how quickly it will happen. This is romantic comedy which is unlike other Carell films but for me stands up brilliantly well in the rom-com category. The film is different from many other rom-com films which for me works in its favour and makes it well worth checking out.
