Exceptional
This is so incredibly well done and in every level-the research, the telling of the story and the writing. I cannot imagine tackling such a complex story and medical details for readers but this author is exceptionally adept. I learned so much through this book and about how it was not just a space race but a science race. How ethocs and morality play into that political and religious backdrop was fascinating, too. It made me really reflect on WWI and WWII—how war had changed over time and how what was witnessed might have impacted Dr. White and other researchers, surgeons and pseudo surgeons. This was a fascinating story but at times difficult with the studies. She handles what is already macabre at times well but just be aware.

An unnerving but bold read
The ethical considerations around animal experimentation are highlighted and it required a certain suspension of revulsion, but the science is undeniably fascinated.

A true story - fascinating and sometimes gruesome
This was a fascinating look into the scientific process for a finding a cure for a human body that has failed - transplantation of a head (versus transplantation of organs). Transplantation was a very new idea in the time period discussed in this book. A true story that took place in the 1940s and 1950s (and beyond), it is engaging. The reader should be warned that there are some explicit descriptions of the use of animals (specifically primates) in the experiments. If you can get through those descriptions, it is thought provoking, including a question of where the soul resides (assuming a soul exists) in the human body. I had to power my way through those descriptions and was able to do it as I kept in mind that this was part of the experimental process. At that time in history, the use of animals in experimentation was common. Today, our sensitivity to the use of animals in experimentation is much higher than it was back in the 1940s and 1950s.

Horrified and intrigued
This is a very intriguing book. I bought it after running into the premise of the story in a random online article. As an animal rights activist, I am horrified by what happened to so many monkeys and animals during this time period. At the same time, I am intrigued by what could be very historic scientific achievement and the many developments this can lead to in the futureThis was a pretty easy read. The style of the book is a bit reminiscent of The Devil in White City, another book I liked. I would recommend this book to others—in fact, I actually already did :)
