That being said the grain of oak is fairly discernible even after sanding and painting (which is fine if you are matching painted oak). If you expect a smooth finish I suggest selecting a birch product which has much less graining. **Q: Should the paper back be removed prior to applying adhesive?** A: No absolutely not..the backing is there too provide stability and integrity to the thin layer of wood. Apply the adhesive directly to the backing. I thought that this had adhesive when I ordered it but it did not. Not a big deal I just used contact cement and it turned out perfectly. My only complaint is that so of the veneer was damaged when it arrived.
