EC stands for Electronically Commutated, and it combines AC and DC voltages bringing the best of both worlds; the motor runs on a DC voltage, but with a normal AC supply. It has maybe 72hrs on it so far recirculating 65C air. I worry about the electronics... but so far it's holding up well. It does not move as much air as some other models, but I knew that when I bought it. For my use, it's plenty good enough. The cord: Throw it away. Or fix it. The switch on this cord is a fire hazard. The wire is poorly crimped and I was able to pull the wire out of the contacts inside the switch. The switch makes kind of intermittent contact when in the ON position... which creates a high resistivity connection... which makes heat... which melted part of the switch. Thankfully I was in the room when the device turned off spontaneously to diagnose why and noticed that the switch was hot. DO NOT USE THIS SWITCH. Or do.
