The voltage settled out to around 8.5Vdc after a while, but the peak voltage was a little concerning. The batteries never got hot though, so I kept going. I have read in RC hobbyists and battery manufacturers forums that battery temperature is what you really need to monitor and keep below a critical level due to the fact that these batteries can over heat, explode and even catch fire in extreme cases, this is why you are not supposed to leave them unattended while charging. So far they are working as intended with pretty good capacity.
