ABSOLUTELY. Received mine today. When it reached 658 degrees F, I used it to melt a HUGE glob of solder to test it's true heat value and to test whether it is good for desoldering. So, it will probably burn off your insulation of your connectors it you put it too close, or hold it on the connector longer than necessary. I did not try to see if it gets hotter than the 658 deg. F. It might. I quit testing when it did what I got it for. **Q: Will this melt solder to replace a surface mount IC?** A: It should work.
