Even better than the anime
I previously streamed the anime and really enjoyed it so I went looking for the original books and was pleasantly surprised to find a professional localization. The anime is a good adaptation, but The Asterisk War is a complex world and the book gives greater insight into the characterization and morality.

Fascinating world
When I encounterd the animae of this story, I was struck by the color and breadth of it's vision. I've always frefered the original print versions for getting into the story and characters. This tale is well told. I look forward to reading the whole of it!

One of ‘These’ Stories with Fighting Elements
If you frequently watch Anime, play Visual Novels, enjoy Manga, or read Light Novels, chances are, you already know what I’m talking about. These kinds of stories are everywhere. That doesn’t mean they are bad, though.Let’s travel to Asterisk. The First Star:Don’t judge a book by its cover. In this case, forget all about that.Judge this book by its cover. It’s pretty accurate.I love these illustrations. They are so cute, it’s unbearable. And there are a lot of them! For a roughy 170 pages-long light novel, a dozen or so illustrations are a huge amount.I appreciated them, and they are cool, so here’s a star for that. The Second Star:Ok, the girls are cute, but because this book is rather short, we only get to see a lot of one of them, really. Unsurprisingly, that’s the girl on the cover, Julis. She is a princess and a Strega, which roughly translates to the most overpowered beings (except for the protagonist) in the world of this book.I’m not even kidding.First comes something called Genestella with an aptitude for wielding strange weapons called Luxes, and among those Luxes, the strongest are called Orga-Luxes.A Genestella who can do stuff I will hereby describe as magic is called a Strega.Julis-Alexia von Riessfeld is a fire-bender, basically. She closed herself off from the world and only started interacting with someone when a boy (the protagonist) saw her naked in the opening chapter. No, I’m not kidding, I’m as serious as you can be.Nonetheless, through some circumstance or another, she spends some time with Ayato Amagiri, and she shows her cute sides, too.The other two are Claudia, the student council president (which translates to almost-all-powerful being in an anime setting), and Saya, the childhood friend of Ayato (which, in turn, translates to being part of the rejected women's club).Anyway, I liked these girls.Stars for them. The Third Star:Combine cute girls with powerful battles, and you arrive at the three-star-tier.At least in this case. The Asterisk is basically a battle-island where kids, teenagers, and young adults from six different schools can fight for glory and the fulfillment of their wishes.Getting what you want by the power of your muscles… that’s something, I guess? There were some battles in this book, and they were well-narrated, as far as I could tell. Something about young people beating each other up seems to entertain me.Not that anyone gets seriously hurt, though.A star for their safety. The Fourth Star:I thoroughly enjoyed this book… So why only three stars? For one, this book lacked any sort of substance. The protagonist knows this, too. His whole reason for coming there was to find something he wanted to do.We later find out that his libido, at least, is fully intact because his reason for living becomes the very same fiery princess whom he saw naked and in other embarrassing situations. As I said, at least he’s self-aware.Is he also aware of the lack of stars here? The Fifth Star:Lastly, it’s one of those stories.I already mentioned it in the title, and… I can’t appreciate them for any sort of innovation or writing prowess because we’ve seen the same thing a hundred times already. It’s not only that he walks in on a girl while she’s changing, but all the personality traits of the girls around him, too. They are cute but that’s all.Claudia, the always-smiling president who acts strangely affectionate to Ayato, literally calls herself a being of darkness. It’s like she’s trying to be some kind of self-aware character. The author is aware of this ‘problem,’ if you want to call it such, and Yuu Miyazaki doesn’t intend to change it, I feel. This story was written for the purpose of being cute and trope-y, and nothing else.I enjoyed it for that, but that’s it.No star, here.I shall remind you of the strong parts of this book, again, though. If you enjoy light-hearted reads you can finish in one sitting and if you enjoy cute girls with some cool fights, this is definitely a book for you. There’s (almost) no substance to this book, but if you aren’t looking for a heavy classic, this might just scratch that itch you never knew how to satisfy.Three stars aren’t bad, it’s standard. It’s not exceptional, but for a certain niche, it’s phenomenal. You see it in the number of reviews going strong up to the latest volume. Some people enjoy the hell out of this series, and if you want to try it out, by all means, do it.The worst that could happen is that you get invested with the characters and have to buy the whole series in one go, but then again, is that even bad?Ine Airlcana

Opinion
The world building is fantastic... It makes me think our reality is really boring...Beside that, I find the characters amazingly captivating and the plot fluid and well connected.About translation, it enriched my english thou. Many adverbs and adjectives I've learned just by reading this light novel. But I hope for a translation in my native language, brazilian portuguese.I totally recommend this reading. And watching the anime as well.
