Why does this crimper require you to crimp the connector 2 times, while other similar brand only require you to crimp once?

i concur. same issue, both with the lugs that came with it and 2 other brands i have. it pinches out a large tab on the first crimp and slides off with minimal force. a second crimp after turning the fitting to crush down the "tab" and they seem to hold fine after that.

Will this tool also crimp ferrules onto wire rope?

While it could crimp them, it would not make a trustworthy crimp.

Are there any directions as far as what die position for wire size? I can figure it out by trial and error but would prefer not to guess.

I didn’t receive any with the one I ordered. I also had to grind out the largest one to fit a 0 gauge wire (which is the reason I bought it in the first place). Don’t buy this if you plan to use with 0 gauge.

Over seas I think China I bought a better lug and it crimped it fine good little crimper for the money. Lugs not so much.
