It's handy idea, as the section of this collar that will be in contact with your body can be washed. The same type of cloth as the sleeve covers the entire item and is not removable. It's not as large as a previous microwaveable neck pad that I had, nor as heavy. So that makes it easier to travel with. Lacking the heft and real estate of the previous item means it will not retain heat for as long. That pad would hold heat for about an hour. This one is about 20 minutes. This has a "hook and loop" fastener on the ends. You can fasten it and go about your day. You could even heat this, put it on and slip a coat or jacket over it to rake leaves or shovel snow.
