if i buy this emotiva amp, would i need an av receiver that delivers 1.5 volts from the pre out to the emotiva amp? in that case which receiver?

Yes, you will need and AV Receiver or a pre-amp to deliver the audio to the amp. You will also need some decent RCA cables. Denon, Marantz and Yamaha are good AV Receivers. Make suree they have pre-amp out puts.  Most sub $600 receives do not.

Does each channel require explicit input? could we use 2 channel preamp output as input to an xpa4 - 4 channel outputs?

Yes, you can do this.  I do this with a different amp manufacturer.  I run 560watts/channel into my speakers.  All you need is an RCA or XLR cable that is "split" so that the one channel from your preamp is split into the two ends(XLR) in the amp.  Ibought a HOSA YXM-101.5 XLR cable, from AMAZON, and it works wonderfully well.   Most people put the lion's share of their audio investment into their speaker purchase.   And that is as it should be.  But the system is only as good as its weakest link.  Aplifiers, while not considered "sexy" by the audiophile uninitiated are often appreciated once a copious amount of quality power-as the Emotiva here can deliver-is driven through a good set of speakers.  In fact, most speaker "blow outs" are not caused by too much plwer but rather by too little.  A good or great(as this Emotiva is) amplifier is the crowning touch to a great sound system.

.1% thd into 8 ohms? and a 39# amp really? just how long will this hold up at reference levels?

How does this connect to a marantz 7011 for front and center? i don't see any rca slots on here. is it just single rca per slot?

You will connect a 9V trigger from the marantz to the amp then use coaxial cable to connect the speakers from the marantz and amp including the speaker wires to the amp
