Beautiful river travel
Read this book while travelling the very same route. I assume that this made the book more special for me and I was gripped. Conjured up times gone by not sure if the appeal would hold from my armchair but read it and then book your ticket.

An advernture then and now
Having experienced some of the same places - more recently and in the less pioneering context of a Pandaw cruise on the Rajang - this was an amusing and informative read. An adventure then and now ...

A book recommended by Lonely Planet which I especially enjoyed having visited Borneo in comfort in May 2015
A well written adventure story of two travellers who's wish is to find an unexplored mountain range in Borneo. Their relationship with their Guides and the Tribes that they meet along the way and their own friendship. The hardship of Jungle trecking river trips and the food.

Disconnected and fails to deliver
Hi, a personal view but so far disappointing. Its hasn't made me laugh and isn't written in the style of a true adventure challenge either. It's kind of like an unedited set of notes that don't connect into a strong story line. For what was obviously quite an interesting journey, the writing just isn't inspiring and doesn't draw me in in the same way as other true adventures. It's not a page-turner and seems to meander off in different narratives and I find myself unsure on what I've just read and what's happened in the story. This could have been so much better. Not great, sorry. I shall probably give up on it.

Fascinating and Amusing
In this day and age quite an adventure story with some stunning bird watching for good measure. No idea how or why they ended up there

A great travel companion while traveling around Borneo
I started reading this book in Kapit and finished it in Belaga. In between these two towns I cycled around the inner part of Sarawak not far from where the story happened. A must read for anyone who plans to travel in this amazing part of the world.

Wanna know - but won't go.
A great way to experience the worst travel destinations, the most unsanitary accommodation, and the least reliable travel companions within the safety of your own kindle.O'Hanlon refuses to allow logic to moderate impulsiveness in almost every travel decision he makes ... and what could be the harm in that, unless you were in Borneo. His high spirits, intelligence and completely ungovernable drive to complete a quest make O'Hanlon the most delightful, and infuriating, guide to places you just shouldn't visit. I know Borneo is dangerous; I've read about the dangers of dengue, typhoid, malaria, amoebic dysentery and a hundred other things that would stop me from buying a ticket to this destination, O'Hanlon has read the same stuff, but strides confidently through these warnings and urges the unknown to hurl everything it's got at him.Thank heavens for this witty, erudite, and fearless man. Because his writing is so engaging, and his attitude so courageous/foolhardy, he allows wimps like me to see the world that would have been otherwise hidden. O'Hanlon isn't a hero, athlete, champion or adventurer - he's a bit like me, except brave, and funny, and less likely to scream when he's frightened.Truly engaging and funny... a delight.

into the heat of borneo
A priori je ne vous commande des livres que parce qu'ils m'intéressent... Je comprends mal le sens de ces questionnaires bien lointains du plaisir de la lecture...

Engaging, informative
Reads fast. I learned a lot. Can see why this is a bit if a classic. Abrupt ending. Definitely recommend it.

Two men on a boat
No heroics but a very factual and humorous account of a physically challenging trip, a very un-hackneyed portrait of local people, changing times and mores, plus enchanting passages of English dialogue with non native speakers.
