I just used this for the first time and one of my ferrets ate some of it, is that safe? Normal?

Ferrets eating litter is absolutely NOT normal. This can cause a blockage and either kill your ferret or cost you about $2000 dollars to diagnose and remove. Find yourself either a “exotic vet” or “pocket animal vet” and ask that question.

Does this contain baking soda?

I spoke directly to the manufacturer. The cat litter has baking soda. The small animal litter and bedding does not. I have rabbits. Baking soda is toxic to rabbits.

What is the difference between the Fresh News small animal litter and the cat litter, besides the cat litter costing substantially less per pound?

Well fresh news is compressed news paper which is very biodegradable, now I have both indoor rabbits and a cat, the cat uses clumping cat litter and we tried fresh news for our rabbits , it worked great but the cost was just too high, so in the end we use horse bedding pellets, low cost, biodegradable and non toxic to rabbits.

Can i use this for a kitten? 6 months.

I don't see why not if the kitten accepts it however I wouldn't recommend it unless it's for emergency one-time purposes. You would likely have to dump out almost all of the litter box daily and refill which would get costly. You're better off getting a clumping litter such as Tidy Cat or Arm and Hammer brands. I don't think this this would control the smell of cat urine very well and wouldn't control the poop smell at all. The pellets desinegrate and crumble after absorbing liquid which makes it difficult to only scoop out urine. This would be a very poor cost-effective choice to actual litter.
