The box will contain 1 metal "ears" that attach to the back side of the box, allowing you to mount the box from the side.

Dimensions are 4 1/2" tall x 2 3/4" wide x 2" deep.

Can this replace an exterior light ( yard light) previous box?

Yes. That is an outdoor rated weather proof box.

Can this box be mounted from behind?

There are four holes in the corners that appear to be there so they can be punched out, to accommodate nuts an bolts. There is also a threaded hole in the back that could be used for mounting. See photo.
