Good portable soldering system!
I already have a few 18-volt Ryobi products, so this was an easy choice. It heats up quickly and the lights tell you when it has reached temperature and when it is safely cooled down after shutting off. It will solder for hours on the small standard 18-volt battery. It's portability is great for doing under dash work in a car and it has a good long cord. The metal safety coil/iron holder is great because you can safely 'park' the hot iron while under the dash to avoid damaging the interior of the car. Basic and simple with safety!UPDATE:September 12th, 2022After using this for a while, no matter how well I try to clean the tip on the soldering pencil, it won't take solder. The tip isn't showing any wear, and the solder rolls right off of it and won't stick! And because of this, it's hard to transfer heat to the item you are soldering. Has anyone else noticed this?

Impressed. Works great for light duty soldering
I only do small projects with soldering usually just wiring harnesses and stuff like that. I didn't expect very much from this because it runs off of a battery but I was pleasantly surprised to find that it heats up in about 30 seconds and has better than expected life on a single charge. I was able to get several harnesses built and it usually takes me about an hour each obviously not constantly soldering but I'd say there was probably a hundred joints and there was still life left in the battery when I finished.

Tip doesn't go past 105 degrees F >=(
Was really excited to be without a cord and portable. The iron base gets up to 235+F, but the tip can't even melt solder if I apply it directly. I can't solder boards if the tip won't work. I can't desolder with it either. I'm extremely disappointed. I used a 18V 4Ah 72 Wh.I have a cheap RadioShack Iron from years and years ago I pulled out of a drawer. Years of Neglect and the tip still reaches 150F+ at the tip and no problem soldering or desoldering. I'm very unhappy with this purchase from Ryobi.
