a good a steady guide to help in times of depression
Wayne Mack is one sure and steady guide to help any person through depression and loneliness. Reason is in his experience as a counselor, his compassion and concern and most of all he guides them out of the stubborn darkness with the Word of God but not neglecting possible physiological reasons. He is aware that people source of depression most of the time is rooted in their being out of fellowship with their Creator therefore do not have the ‘blessed life’ as promised in the Scripture but the ‘fruit of their own ways’ and unresolved ‘guilt.’ Get the book and read it, apply it and restore the joy of the Lord back in your life, Randy.

Excellent Resource on Depression
An excellent book on the causes of and Biblical treatments for depression. I recommend it for pastors (I am one), people who are struggling with depression, or loved ones. It is not popular psychology. It is squarely based on Biblical Christianity.

Best Book On Depression
This is probably the best book on depression from a Biblical perspective. I love Wayne Mack's writing and this doesn't dissapoint. Wayne does a great job of walking through what causes depression, how depression is overcome, and how you can move on to a joy-filled life instead. Recommended for counselors, counselees, and friends of those struggling with depression.

What a load of bunk
Written by someone with a limited understanding of mental illness, the kind of understanding one gleans from skimming a Wikipedia page. Mack is part of the 'nouthetic' counseling school of thought, which repudiates psychology and says that the Bible is only textbook needed to be a qualified counselor. Mack states that depression is never the result of chemical imbalance in the brain because the Bible does not define depression as such. Only the Bible is not and was not written to be a counseling textbook or manual for diagnosing mental conditions. Is it useful for instruction, yes, but to say that is a textbook for dealing with mental health problems is myopic at best and dangerous at worst. If you use it as a textbook for that subject, then you might as well use as the sole text to understand history, literature, science, medicine or any other subject the Bible remotely touches. Futhermore, textbooks and instruction manuals are not living and active and do not allow for mystery or awe or wonder. (less)
