are the black applicators necessary, or does a q-tip work just as well ?

You don't need them but q tips leave behind very small strands and fall apart a lot easier than the included black ines

I have a gaming laptop and its time to replace thermal paste, will liquid metal be more efficient since I cannot replace or upgrade my cooling system?

Make sure the heat block is copper where it contacts the CPU and GPU, not aluminum. As long as you don't put the liquid metal on aluminum, you will be fine. I put it in my gaming laptop and got a huge improvement in temperature.

Is the one gram kit enough for a laptops cpu/gpu die and it's cooler?

Yes, it takes VERY little. I have used the same 1 gram kit for 3 delid cpu's and i still have a lot left
