The Fall of the House of Cabal: The Johannes Cabal Novels, Book 5

Not with a whimper but a bang!
Yes I think its the end - or maybe not. I found this an improvement on the previous book which had too much Horst and too little Johannes. The reappearance of the eight legged succubus from 'A Long Spoon' was a delight - and the post apocalypse London was worthy of Lovecraft - of course feral financiers would be cannibals. I ended hoping that maybe, just maybe Zarenya wouldn't need the fifth phial of elexir and Cabal would be able to revive his lost love. But then I was always a sucker for a happy ending. There is just a smidgeon of hope that somehow another tattered worm eaten, foxed and slightly smouldering volume of the chronicles of Cabal will emerge from somewhere. if it does I shall be waiting , asbestos gauntlets at the ready.

One of the wonderful things about the Cabal sequence is the way continuity of writing style and character is played against changes of genre (here's a fantasy horror, here's a locked-room detective story, a Lovecraftian quest, a ripping yarn adventure..). This book is a fitting successor, trusting we know the characters and vibe, which allows us to race through an unsettling sequence of worlds trying to work out what the hell is going on (the characters, not just the reader). If this IS the end of the sequence, it's a fitting one. Let's hope it's not, though...

A satisfying end to the series
If you liked the other books, I do not think this one will disappoint. Right from the start, it has a great feeling of 'getting the gang back together' - I didn't actually know that I wanted a four-way team-up between Johannes, Horst, Leonie and Zarenyia, but it was rather great. (I will admit that I had been hoping Leonie would meet Horst some day and they would share a moment of exasperation at Johannes, so that made me very happy.) The story moves along at a good pace, a pleasing number of things from previous books are referenced, and the whole thing ends in, really, the only way it could. I will admit to finding it slow to get into, partly because Howard tries to outdo himself with meta commentary and footnoting to a level that almost derailed my enthusiasm, but once the story got moving I stopped caring and just enjoyed the ride. Obviously I hope there will be more Cabal someday (including an apparently unpublished short story about 'Christmas at Maple Durham' which is referenced here?!), but even if there isn't I will be very happy with how this story finished. One of my all-time favourite series of books.

Jumped the shark?
I have enjoyed the other books in the series, but this one felt a little tired and was a struggle to finish.

Disappointed No Kindle Version
I have religiously bought every one of Jonathan L Howard's books, my favourite being The Johannes Cabal series, but find it annoying and very disappointing that this final book in the series is not on Kindle. Why? Perhaps because it generates more money in hard/paperback copy? I will not be buying this book until it is released on ebook and I am afraid it has tainted my opinion of the author.

Could have been better....could also have been worse......
Looks like this is the end. On the whole it was better than I feared and worse than I hoped. Of all the books, this is definitely the weakest one. To be honest, I only truly loved the first two books and liked the third. I didn't like the fourth much, so you can guess how little I actually liked this one. It still receives three stars (which is generous) because Zarenyia (those who have read " A Long Spoon" know her) was a delight and half of the book was actually okay. If this is truly the ending of the whole series (and not just of this particular story) I am fine with that.

excellent
I was in the edge of my seat. Another book as dissimilar to the other books as they are to each other. An enjoyable conclusion to the story…. For now? And a thoroughly enjoyable cast of characters.

A humorous and enjoyable read
I really like the Cabal novels. Although this contained no surprises and was not quite as good as a few of its predecessors, it was still very enjoyable. I like the way the author writes and enjoy his humor.

Fantastic read! A fun continuation of the Cabal series
Fantastic read! A fun continuation of the Cabal series, with plenty of the wry humour and supernatural shenanigans that made the rest of the books so enjoyable.
