Climb the vine trees into a world of whimsy
This novel is great! Having played the early pc game with the same name, I was surprised to find out recently that it was based on a novel! Despite the pc game's low graphics, it had imagination, creativity and told a story in an innovative and interesting way. You controlled the main character Raamo who had ability of pensing and could sense and emit emotions with other characters. The book tells more on the backstory of Raamo and the world of Green-sky. Even though this is categorized as juvenile reading, the author describes the world in a way that draws you into the story. It can be enjoyed by adults too. There is a great message that is relatable to our world now.The book itself is a former library copy which was described by the seller. It is tough to find and I got it at a decent price. What's inside this book is a wonderful world to discover. So take a few wissenberries and enjoy this tale by Zilpha Keatley Snyder.

Secrecy is the root of tyranny
This is the outstanding introduction to the Greensky trilogy, a compelling philosophical exploration ingeniously disguised as a children's fantasy series. In the fantasy world of Greensky, the peaceful Kindar live in trees, read each others' minds, and glide from place to place with silken wings. Guided by their revered rulers, the Ol-Zhaan, the Kindar have nothing to fear... except for falling from their paradise and being forced to face the demons that lurk beneath the forest floor. In addition to providing a marvelous coming-of-age tale set in a wonderful new world, this book will provoke you to ponder and debate important questions about the nature of good and evil. Is it possible to eliminate violence from a society by segregating and repressing the passions? Should governments/priesthoods/scientists withold potentially dangerous knowledge from laypeople to protect them, and does this unshared power inevitably corrupt?Read this book with your kids!

This is the best one of the series
I wanted to read this trilogy because I grew up playing the computer game based on it. The books are good and they clear up some questions I remember from the game. However, the first book is the best, the second is a retelling of the first, and the third is just okay. I'd save your money and get the first book and maybe the computer game and a system to play it on!!!

Good on many levels
I LOVED this book as a child...even had the 'Below the Root' video game for the Commodore 64. A lot of books I loved as a child were not nearly as enjoyable as an adult, but I still greatly enjoyed Below the Root, just in a different way. For a child, the idea of living in a tree and flying (gliding) from place to place really excited my imagination. As an adult, the underlying philosophy of establishing an entire society without violence was really fascinating. I'm not sure if I believe it would actually work, but it made me think. I think this book is good for any age.

Read it when I was in middle/high school and still love it!
This book has several things to offer: a fantastical living place, characters that the author brings to life, and depth between what is actually written. I read this book when I was in middle/high school and never finished it, I searched it out again and finally read it all. I see new meanings in this book, and find how something written in the 70's has ties to what is happening today. If you're interested in how this book (although fantasy) offers political strings, pick it up- you'll like it so much that you'll put it down just so you can make it last longer. Truly!

Still good after all these years
I first read this series when I was on middle school. It is fun to read the series again 30 years later and still enjoy the story.

Wonderful YA book about social injustice
Below the Root was one of the first scifi/fantasy books I can ever remember reading. No crazy vampires or teen witches but a very spiritual book about two races separated by ignorance. Well written, a totally different environment (they live in cities that are in giant trees). I've read many times and it always makes me take a step back and look at who we as humans are and sometimes how a few callous individuals rule with no regard for the people.

Inspirou minha vida
