Erratic connection behavior
I purchased this splitter with the intent to expand the single Ethernet port on my cable MODEM, which holds the Ethernet cable from my router. My router has all four available ports occupied. Using the splitter from the modem, I would then have two other Ethernet cable openings available for "directly connecting" devices to the MODEM, with the idea of running Ethernet cables to another room, for example. To test the splitter, I attached it directly to the MODEM and then connected the Ethernet cable from my NETGEAR router into one of three ports on the splitter. Things appeared to work the same way, with little or no effect on the speed of data. So there is nothing physically wrong with the splitter.Because my router allows me to manage any connected devices with a phone app, I decided to move the splitter from the MODEM into one of the ROUTER ports instead, so I can manage any devices that pass through the router. One device attached to my router (via Ethernet cable) is my printer. I disconnected my printer Ethernet cable and plugged the splitter into that port on ROUTER, and then plugged the printer Ethernet cable into the splitter. Hmmm.. the printer recognized and active "LAN" connection --- but --- the printer stayed offline and could not print. Also, the NETGEAR app did not show the printer as a connected device.. I tried other devices with the splitter and they were not even recognized by the NETGEAR router APP. Perhaps this is because there is no "power" to the splitter to allow a strong enough signal to pass? I am not sure. When I removed the splitter from the router and re-connected the Ethernet cable from the printer directly in to the router, everything worked fine.So --- while it is possible that I am incorrect in how I am using the splitter --- maybe it only needs to be connected to a modem and not a router --- I cannot use this device as I had hoped. Therefore, I give this product a low rating when trying to use it with a ROUTER.
