Top Gun F-14A Tomcat Fighter Plane - 1:48 Scale 754 Piece Building Set with Maverick and Goose Figures

Wow. OK. I might be a little biased here, but when I saw Top Gun as a kid, I fell in love with the F-14 Tomcat. I was 7 and totally into LEGO and I kept asking my parents, when would I ever get a F-14 Toy??? Sure there were the Force One Die Cast models by Ertl, but I loved LEGO and I really wanted a buildable version. To my dismay, it never materialized... Flash forward ~35 years to present day and we now have the COBI F-14 Tomcat building set. I still love building block toys, which I now share that passion with my 7 yr old son, and when I saw the F/A-18 Super Hornet from Top Gun: Maverick get released, I knew it was only a matter of time before the Tomcat came out. With the European Pound conversion to USD, Amazon's price was about inline for what COBI was charging for a direct sale, (maybe even a little bit cheaper) so I purchased it. The plastic build quality on the COBI set is very good. The plastic pieces fit very nice and crisp; their machine tooling tolerances are very high and each piece snapped together perfectly with clean edges, unlike many other 3rd party building toys, such as MegaBlok or the knock-off LEPIN kits. The COBI pieces are mint and felt great, with no waxy feeling to them. The build instructions are clear in general, however you have to pay attention as some of their slanted/curve pieces.. Very similar in size but in the instructions it's hard to tell which piece they are referring to (flat sloped or slight radius curved, for same 2x1 length, etc) The majority of this kit is a light grey plastic so pay attention to the instruction arrows that they have denoting which brick on the piece for alignment purposes. My son and I took approximately 4 hours to build this (going slow) and it was time well spent. The kit comes with 6 molded missiles, (4 not-really-AIM-54s, and 2 AIM-120s). It comes with two little cylinders for the IRST pod for the chin, and the way COBI designed the engines are pretty cool. The landing gear design seems weak, the weight of the model when on the wheels will make the rear landing gear camber out. There is a tailhook, but no signature F-14 airbrake or dual external fuel tanks, sad face emoji :(. The swept wings are neat- however they are not geared so each wing moves independently. The model also has fully movable rear horizontal flaperons, which are attached via ball joint. Vertical stabs are molded, as well as the nose cone and front fuselage, which differs a lot from what a traditional LEGO build philosophy that try to use bricks to create the shape, but in this case, it's a good mix of the shape they're aiming for and practical use of plates. My favorite part of this kit is the dual jet engine intake design with the canted angles (just like the real aircraft) and once its put together and the top plates put on, I felt the designers did an excellent job on implementation. There's no radar antenna behind the nose cone, just a 2x2 plate to attach the nose to, but the canopy opens to reveal Maverick and Goose mini-figs in all their glory. These two mini-figs are full size, unlike the half sized Mini-Fig you get of in the COBI F/A-18 Super Hornet kit. The prints on the helmets are nice and for Maverick's head you get Tom Cruise's signature smirk, and with Goose, you get Anthony Edwards' signature mustache. The cockpit doesn't have very much in detail other than one control stick for Maverick, so if you want to customize it there is a 2x1 open space in front of Maverick's mini-fig where you can gen up like an up front controller or multi-function display.. The canopy is a single piece with molded in lines, a little bit of black paint or black sticker would have been nice for detailing. Also of note: NO STICKERS! all the details on the jet are printed onto the plastic, which is a pretty nice move. The model set comes with a flight stand if you want the plane off the table, but it's a little weak and the model will wobble from slight bumps. I'm really happy with this purchase and enjoyed building it with my son. If you're a Top Gun fan, an aviation enthusiast, and/or like high-quality building block sets: this is a great set from COBI. Next move will be requesting permission for a fly-by!

It was an awesome build. Love the TOP GUN theme. Super enjoyable. No missing pieces, clear instructions, and one of my favorite builds. Love that it’s functional. Would recommend to anyone who loves to build.

Fun build with unique pieces. Cobi does it again with another classic aircraft. Great details & easy to follow instructions made this a fun build. The swept wings work great & the stand works great as well. It’s hard to get the mini figures in the cockpit & the canopy down over them. Also the overall size of the aircraft was smaller than I thought it would be. But overall I really enjoyed the build & it looks great in my collection.

I love the Pad Printing!!!! One of the major reasons I buy a ton of Cobi sets. Besides no stickers they do the military sets that Lego will not do. So Cobi gets all of my business for this genre of brick builds. This set is amazing and looks awesome. With the exception of some loose parts on the intake that you have to be careful not to knock off it is SOLID!! Love the clutch power of Cobi bricks. My builds are for display purposes so the only down side is the stand so far for all of the plane sets. They wobble with any and I mean any type of vibration to the base. I am working on my own design to try to fix it for now I just place the plaque plate on a small 3x4 plate. I wish Cobi would fix this one issue with all of their planes. I have bags of black plate and tile that I hopefully will use to come up with a better stand. The stand is the only thing from giving this excellent set a 5 out of 5 rating.

Big set. Instructions can be a little difficult but if you slow down and take your time everything fits perfectly. Awesome swing wing design, classic top gun look.

This was a gift for our son. He absolutely loved it. I was concerned about it not being the quality of Legos, but the product was great.

My only gripe is Goose won’t stay down sitting in his seat. Otherwise fantastic.

Schönes Model, macht sich gut im Regal. Wäre stabil genug, damit auch zu spielen, dafür ist es mir aber zu schade. Steinequalität ist einfach top. Halten sehr gut zusammen. Keinerlei Farbabweichungen und alles bedruckt. Über die Figuren kann man streiten, ich glaube einfach nur, dass ich und viele andere, hier die Lego typischen Figuren zu gewohnt sind, um die COBI Figuren wirklich gut zu finden. Aber es gibt nichts objektives an den Figuren auszusetzen. Selbst wenn man den Preis für original Legofiguren oben drauf rechnet, ist das Set immer noch besser und günstiger, als alles was Lego zu bieten hätte.

Qualité exceptionnelle pour un set qui n’est pas de la célèbre marque. Il n’a manqué aucune pièce, les ajustements sont parfaits et le rendu fini est magnifique. Monté en 3 heures environ, sans se presser. Lunettes pour vision de près recommandées pour les moins jeunes..! 👍🏻

La calidad de los bloques es muy similar a la de LEGO, diría que igual o mejor, y de verdad me impresiona. Tiene una gran facilidad de armado para gente con más experiencia armando sets. Detalles de las figuras y del set en general son increíbles, más siendo fan de los aviones y de las películas de Top Gun. Ya tiene tiempo que lo compré y a pesar del polvo y otros contratiempos el material es muy resistente y durable. Por la cantidad de detalles que lleva, el precio y la calidad vale mucho la pena para uso personal o regalo.

Aereo stupendo da costruire! Istruzioni molto chiare, il tutto è diviso in sacchetti, per chi è fan di Top Gun come me lo consiglio!
