It's very easy to pop them apart. I took a very thin small sliver of clear plastic to slide between the batteries when their not being used. I also took a very sharp exacto blade to carve out a tiny notch in one half of the ball so I could easily insert, and remove the sliver of plastic without having open the balls. Since the plastic sliver I used is clear, I can leave it intact, and it's not noticeable. I do not have to remove the sliver of plastic all of the way from between the batteries; just enough to until the two batteries make contact, and the lights begin to glow. When I'm ready to turn them off, I simply slide the clear plastic in between the two batteries again, until the lights turn off. Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful! The first one, I used non stop for a test run, and it lasted for days. The batteries are cheap, and can be bought most anywhere. I opened the ball, pulled the tab, then put it back together on my hair and it looked like I had orbs in my hair. Lots of fun. I put the tabs back in at the end of the night so I will see how long the batteries last.
