Audible clicks- YES. It also kind of 'jolts' to a stop when it catches. Nothing cheaply made or appearance with any of the 3 that I have. They also happen to be the same model for what it's worth. You will not regret owning these reels.

Q: Can the orientation of the cord delivery be changed so that if ceiling mounted it can be pulled straight down instead of off to the side?

Yes it can, I had to go look since I installed mine back in 2013. I turned my outlet to point straight down as well, my ceiling is at about 14 feet, just in front of my lift. If you read my review, I rated the quality as alright for the home owner / do it yourself type. If I used this daily I would look for a better unit. I moved the stop so the cord can be reached from the floor so about 5 feet does not have to reel back up. Sometimes it seems it just barely wants to reel in the last bit. Since I only use it occasionally I can live with that. Seems if you want a good crisp rewind you need to buy a unit longer than you need and then trim off a few feet.
