Peripheral Nerve Entrapments: Clinical Diagnosis and Management

Excellent and very much needed work on peripheral nerve entrapments and how they present. This book is a landmark in the field of Pain Medicine and is a “must have” source of information for Pain Medicine physicians. Well written and very informative. Gives the Pain practitioner something else to consider in his differential diagnosis when treating patients.

Nerve entrapments are a grossly unrecognized and underappreciated contributor to different pain conditions and neurological symptoms. In challenging cases where traditional imaging studies are "unremarkable" or specialists feel pain is all psychosomatic, evaluating for a component of nerve entrapment can often bring validity to patient's complaints and provide options as well as hope for all involved. Even for providers who themselves do not perform injection procedures, the knowledge in this book can still be invaluable for patient care. The hard cover book is quite sizeable, but as a pain management specialist who sees difficult cases weekly, if I had one book to lug around in my backpack for reference, this would easily be the one.

Superb reference

Very good book!

I like the brevity of this text as it gets right to the point with a number of peripheral nerve entrapments that affect millions of people. The images could be upscaled a bit, but the text is easily readable. It is frustrating to have diagram on one page and description on another. I suppose you would want to show two pages at a time when reading on PC, but Kindle Reader does not allow me to do this. The dermatomes are exact in this text and descriptions of nerves give you the basics on its functions. The clinical information is extremely relevant for pain management physicians, physical therapists, and patients trying to recreate symptoms. Spinal surgery is warned against as this treatment is more widely available but often can be a misdiagnosis due to lack of training in evaluating the peripheral nervous system. Relevant journal articles are briefly mentioned and easily referenced for later use. The differential diagnosis is the most important part for evaluating symptoms and chance that a particular diagnosis is the correct one. I don't recommend this for pain management physicians as reference for performing nerve blocks, even though it is helpful for reference in addition to a clinical textbook of anesthesiology. Overall, you can't go wrong this text. Dr. Trescott has done an amazing job pulling all this information together in one book.

Peripheral nerve entrapments are common and often overlooked causes of chronic pain. With the availability of ultrasound, the management of peripheral nerve entrapment pain should be offered by more pain clinics. This book is an excellent review of applied neuroanatomy that will improve your clinical skills, while providing numerous practical approaches to identifying and treating pain problems often overlooked by other clinicians. I have this book in my pain clinic and refer to it often. I highly recommend this book.
