Understanding the importance of wearing masks these days: wise council for children
Author Efrat Haddi steps into the guidance spotlight with this excellent new children’s book that is designed to assist children’s understanding about the pandemic – that ‘strange’ enemy that requires social distancing, hand washing, and wearing of masks. By making the much-needed practice of wearing masks to prevent infection into an entertaining story, Efrat once again proves she is not only a fine tale spinner, but also a reliable source of instruction for teaching important attributes and lessons to children. This well designed and illustrated book poses the questions – Who is behind the mask? – and the answers introduce a wolf, a unicorn, a sloth, a rabbit, a pig, a penguin, a panda, an owl, a narwhal, a llama, a koala, a giraffe, a lion, a fox, an elephant, a dinosaur, a cat, a deer, a ‘caticorn’, and a bear. Each animal – both familiar and unfamiliar – is first presented wearing a mask, then with a happy face without the mask, introducing the idea to children that masks only attempt to disguise others but underneath are friends who likewise appreciate the need for masks. The book is also a fine introduction for naming and identifying animals! As with all of Efrat Haddi’s books the beautifully illustrated stories carry a fine lesson, and she delivers it in such an entertaining way that children will pay attention – and understand. Highly recommended. Grady Harp, October 20
