John (TCG Edition)

I'm a huge Annie Baker fan! One of my favorite plays I have read is "The Aliens", also by Baker, and "John" is definitely on my top ten list of favorite plays. I couldn't quite understand when critics were calling it a modern ghost story, until I reread it and understood that the ghosts were more like skeletons in the closet. The story's ghosts are in essence the past of the characters haunting them, causing rifts between them. Plus, this play has one of the most cool intermission moments I have ever read. It's so unique, in character, and wonderfully important. This play is powerful, spooky, and a lot of fun! I hope that I will be blessed enough to be in it myself or get to watch it live!

A little creepy -- in a wonderful way. Annie Baker peels layers off her characters as the play develops, and things aren't what they seem. An intelligent exploration of relationships, featuring older women who are intelligent rather than the stereotypical dottiness that seems to prevail in many plays. Worth the effort to read and produce.

Annie Baker is a new favorite playwright of mine. This play unfolds very much like a ghost story, without actual ghosts, just haunted people. Much of that atmosphere is due to the location of the play, which is a perfect match to the story. I kept imagining the dolls, staring out, unblinking - such an great way to unsettle an audience. Will be reading more of Ms Baker.

Baker's most recent play (as of this writing) is a quietly devastating tour de force. I finished reading the play, and then immediately read it again. What Baker accomplishes with such a small cast of characters is the incredible range of human emotion from the enraged to the quotidian to the epiphanic.Since I'm squirreled away in Memphis, I doubt I'll ever get to see this play. But reading it was enough for me.

Loved the play. The playwright is a genius and love her other works. Seller sent me a USED copy when I purchased a new copy though. There was writing on some of the pages :( But a great play!

Best play I have read in a while. Masterful work by an already phenomenal playwright. The layers that exist in this play are amazing! Good job!!

This is a wonderful piece of writing, I'm blown away, dumbfounded, how does Annie Baker create these amazing stories/plays? I hope she doesn't stop.

Annie Baker is brilliant. Buy this play and enjoy. She is the leading playwright of her generation.

Great play, I saw it performed and had to get my hands on the script!

Excellent. Read before seeing the production at the National Theatre in London. A must seewith amazing stage set, the writer cutting every assumption away, keeping us enthralledfor all the three hours. Fab!!! Go and see it.

Excellent - bought this after seeing The Flick at the National. Annie Baker is a brilliant playwright - pacey dialogue, some really funny moments, and this weird sense of unease through the whole thing. Can't wait to see it performed.
