We recently installed a 16' x 20' thin (<1/8") outdoor polypropylene carpet on our deck. Carpet dealers recommended the carpet be surged to avoid splaying. The cost of a custom surged carpet installed was really expensive over $1500 more than what we could order as a roll of carpet delivered to our home. After careful research on-line I learned how difficult it is to glue or finish seams on a polypropylene carpet and learned that the best way is to basically melt the cut end of the material. Since we needed to cut long sections off two sides to fit our deck a continuous operation hot knife seemed like it might work, but I couldn't find any specific information on youtube or Google let alone whether a 100W knife would have enough power. Turned out this produce was perfect. We were able to make long straight cuts with the cut edge of the carpet hot melted so it couldn't fray. We could easily manipulate the blade to trim complicated corners for posts. Two sides and many cutouts were needed around posts and pipes. As expected we had to periodically clean the melted plastic off the blade, but when done the knife worked perfectly. I do recommend, however, to wear masks to avoid inhalation of odors I highly recommend.

It has a variable heat control that works perfect with different fabrics. I use it primarily to cut sail cloth and canvas, and it performs outstanding, sealing the seam perfectly. The tip must be removed to store it in the supplied case, but in my case, I keep it near my fabric cutting area so, no need to pack it. Only if you need to transport it safely or you are not going to use it for a while, you use the case. Just a minor inconvenience to remove the tip to make it fit in the case, but for sure it was designed as is on purpose, to prevent melting the case if packed when it still hot.

Some reviews knock the adjustment wheel on this but I found it to be fine. I paid NO attention to the numbers on the wheel and simply adjusted the knob upward until the cutting blade started to glow red. I set the adjustment to a dull red glow on the blade and sliced thru a bunch of outdoor fabric (like Sunbrella) with a perfectly melted edge on the fabric and it was very easy to "cut" in a straight line. The tool heats up in just a few seconds so there is really no wait time at all. Now the downside: As others have pointed out, the foam padding in the case is cut for the disassembled tool. After you use the cutter once it would be great to put it back in the case easily but no, you have to take the cutter off and if used, take the cutter base off as well. Not the end of the world but a simple design to allow storage in either configuration would have been a HUGE win for the manufacture at little to no cost. The hard plastic case is cheap and doesn't hold it's shape well. And like others, the plastic locks the lock the case shut sometimes fall off and do not fit well. In either situation, the case isn't designed to accommodate the power cord (which nicely, is quite long, a good thing) so you have to simply STUFF it into the case. A quality case and better designed internal padding would be a night and day improvement for this product. A 3-inch velcro strap to replace the cheap tie-wrap on the power cord would be nice as well. You are close RoMech. Your cutter blade could use some upgrading as well. Granted it works just fine - let's say that again, it works just fine - but it looks like it was fabricated by junior high school shop class welder wannabe!

This hot knife is GREAT! It cuts very fast. The temperature control dial is certainly hard to read, but the light flickers when temperature is on low setting, and is solid when on high setting. So, once this is understood, it's somewhat intuitive to adjust temperature up and down based on the flickering frequency. And this works fine, since every material is different and having numbers on the dial probably wouldn't help much either. The fan comes on only when trigger is pulled, and is very quiet. Some of the other videos I saw of this in use made me think it would be a loud tool. It's definitely not. And the tool hasn't overheated at all, and has been cutting through everything like butta. It is certainly annoying though that this tool does not fit in its own case when the cutting blade is attached. So, I used the tool to modify the case, and it now fits just fine.
