    Wonderful and heart breaking

I cried through most of this book. It is filled with resilience and heart break. No one comes out of this war whole. But it is also filled with themes of family and friendships that span beliefs. I can't wait to read the third one.

    Darker Than The First

I think it’s highly probable that Volume Two of the “North And South” saga is the reason the author chose to write the trilogy. I have no evidence of this other than, unlike Volume One, there does not seem to be as many random events experienced by the cast of characters (or happening in the background for them). There are far fewer incredulous coincidences with historical happenings, which makes this installment more grounded, I guess. But, to me, at least, also bit less fun.Following the logic(?) of the first volume, I would not have been surprised for a character to have been present for the delivery of the Gettysburg Address, the burning of Atlanta, and seated in the box next to President Lincoln when he was assassinated, trying desperately to catch Booth as he leapt down to the stage. Instead, the characters are spread out from North to South (and, eventually, out West and even as far East as England). They have their own independent adventures which, taken individually, are not as interesting as the whole of them combined. This book aims to be a sweeping epic, and mostly succeeds.Much like Volume One, the least realistic but also most fun parts involve the cast of villains and their various schemes. They are almost cartoonish in their fiendish, fictitious plans, and I’m kind of disappointed none twirled an oily mustache or threatened to tie a helpless damsel to a nearby railroad track. Instead, we get various attempts at being bad mostly because these bad actors are bad at heart and make bad life choices. Revenge against perceived slights seems to be the primary motivation, followed by greed and a little bit of lust. Ultimately, most of the villains come together in a poorly defined conspiracy to assassinate Jefferson Davis, which makes me question if doing some good for the wrong reasons still might be more noble than the “hero” character who becomes a detective and tries to stop them. The fact that this book is considered historical fiction and not speculative fiction should let a prospective reader know how this particular plot turns out.Anyway, this tale is definitely darker in tone than the first. Main characters suffer and even die, but that should not be unexpected when a book has “Love And War” in its title. Even with its over-the-top villains, it takes itself very seriously, and loses a bit of its melodramatic charm along the way.
