Astrology is an ancient tool for understanding ourselves, our relationships, and ourlife’s path. It begins with the belief that everything in the cosmos is connected. Then it traces the connection between us and the planets at the moment of our birth. That connection reflects and influences every facet of our life on Earth, from love to money. Once you learn the language of astrology, it makes perfect, practical sense. The Essential Guide to Practical Astrology offers an easy-to-understand exploration of this celestial language that goes far beyond daily horoscopes. In these pages, you learn how to calculate and decipher your birth chart; meet and discover the secrets of the great zodiac “wheel” and its 12 signs; and tour the 12 houses that symbolize the major arenas in which life’s big events occur. You also get:• A road map through the planets, Sun, and Moon, along with key information on what their sign and house placement - and their relationships to one another - mean.• A walk through the cycles of astrology and how they reflect cycles in your own life.• Guidelines for creating daily, monthly, yearly, and long-range planners so you can better manage your personal goals.• Tips for mastering the language of astrology to make predictions for your future. The Essential Guide to Practical Astrology gives you a no-nonsense approach to a system that helps you discover what’s best for you, your life, and your world. Review: A Must-Read Before Taking Any Astrology Course - This is an outstanding book for anyone who is new to astrology. It contains a wealth of information, and the way it is written makes it much easier to build a solid foundation in astrology. It is one of my top three books for learning astrology on my own. The content is very well structured, clear, and easy to follow, without feeling superficial or overwhelming. I highly recommend this book as a study resource before starting any astrology course, whether in person or online. It helps you understand the basics properly and prepares you to get much more out of formal study later on. Absolutely worth the money. Review: Planets and aspects and houses...oh, my! - First, let me say that I am not very good at providing reviews in this type of forum, but I do use reviews to choose products. So I hope you will take what you can use and leave the rest. April Kent is a wonderful writer, funny and engaging and (most importantly) able to make a point clearly and concisely. It will be easy for readers of Practical Astrology to systematically piece together the elements of their charts to determine what influences are at play for each area of concern. For instance, I spent a little time looking at the part of my chart which governs how others see me, and learned that a confusing Neptune in my first house may make it difficult to exert my personality. Fortunately, there is an upside to this placement (a well-known quality of mine) the willingness to defend others. The fact that Saturn is transiting my first house explains why I would even bother to be concerned about this area of life. Aaargh! I "appear" to need more independence and self-respect! Anyway, this is a great book for new students of astrology, and will provide enough unique perspective to entertain more experienced practitioners.

My Astrology Textbook - the only one I’ll need for a long time
Funny, witty, informative. Astrology is a language, it’s an art It’s so complex, incredible, and interesting. If you want to learn the true language of the stars, this book is probably the only one you’ll need for a beginner. I refer to it as my astrology text book. - As Above, So Below - What happens up there, effect what happens down here. What happened in the Sky, effects earth events. That’s the basic definition of astrology. A series of super insane coincidences. That’s how astrologers predict the future, by looking at current placements and comparing to the same placements from the past. They don’t claim to be psychic, and the majority can admit that it’s not always spot on, but it is spot on a lot of the time. Forget what you’ve learned about astrology on Facebook. Throw it out, start over. Modern astrology is so far from accurate.. I don’t like it. This is based around more traditional astrology with more web twists here and there, which is okay! Don’t get me wrong, sone things should evolve To fit the times. However, I like that this book sticks to tradition. It’s open and it’s honest and it expresses the stereotypes about astrology these days on social media.

It's like sitting down and talking face-to-face with Ms. Kent!!!
Having been a `student' of astrology for several years (will probably `always be a student'!!) I can only say that I wish I'd have read this book first! I highly recommend this delightful, entertaining, and informative book to everyone -- especially the beginner! I honestly couldn't put it down! It's like sitting face-to-face in conversation with Ms. Kent. I have quite a library of books already on the subject matter and found this one to be the most easily understood of all of them. It's a good read, informative, and easy to understand. Her wit is entertaining and she holds your attention throughout. A great book to get you going, whether you are merely curious and desire a better understanding, or a serious student of astrology, you will come away more educated and knowledgable on this `art' and will see it all more clearly. If I were asked to recommend a book for ease of understanding to someone eager to learn, this would be at the top of my list!! Read it! You won't be disappointed! This is the first e-book I've ordered by the way.

pretty good!
I'm a newcomer to astrology and signed up for a $50 online AstroTwins class that just let me more confused. This book goes into much better detail that actually explains things, and it's easy to read. Sometimes the "humor" is a bit too frequent or cutesy, but that's okay--it's her style, and mostly I enjoy it. I asked my astrologer what books I should read to get a grip on the practice on my own, and he suggested two books that were completely, absolutely obscure and way over my head. This book has been the antidote to the confusion, intellectual humiliation, and raw overwhelm I suffered from those books (plus I now feel confident that by the time I finish this one, I should be able to tackle those harder ones). My only major complaint is that the book is very dated--all the information listing dates in the back is expired, so it needs some basic updating. One calendar that's recommended is no longer published, so the fact that this is a 10+ year old book shows. But the information is clear and the tone is not stuffy. Sentences are readable and approachable. It makes sense and isn't eye-rollingly elitist. I like April's podcast and the book's tone is similar, just broken down into approachable, one-thing-at-a-time servings, which I really appreciate.

Well Written and Very User Friendly Guide
First of all I love the Wonderful Blog and writing of April on Her Big Sky Astrology website - you need to get her emails and you need to read this book. Very clearly written, nothing scarey, just lots of clearly stated methods to see your chart, plan your life and save the anxiety of thinking you have to track someone down for every urgent decision in your life. This is a great map to your chart, a wonderful primer on astrology and certainly a fundamental book for anyone living and aware on the planet. Enjoy her, she is a fine astrologer and entertaining writer. Some areas that might benefit you personally are the detailed outlines of each sign, the explanations as to how your personal chart is expressed by the houses and the planetary placement. To further aid the novice as well as keen astrologer is the methodology for a daily, monthly or yearly approach to your chart and life. Try the simple, step by step info and you will have a much keener insight into how unique you are, and best of all, how to make the most of that. Note: I am an intuitive reader and it even gave me insights! How good is that!??

Highly Recommended!
April Elliott Kent's "Essential Guide to Practical Astrology" is a perfect choice for anyone who wants to learn more about astrology. As a practicing astrologer, writer and former teacher myself, I can recommend April's book as a great introductory text without hesitation and for several reasons. First and foremost, it is well organized, and well written in a friendly, conversational tone by an EXPERIENCED astrologer who draws practical insights from years of clinical experience working with real people. April's astrological expertise is grounded in reality and she generously and patiently shares her impressive knowledge without being dry and boring. Her writing is lively, very clear, easy to understand, and most importantly: devoid of jargon. This book will not flummox you no matter how much of a beginner you happen to be. April is one of "our best" -- one of the most gifted and entertaining writers in the astrological world. So if you are ready to learn more about astrology, thank your lucky stars for your incredible timing, and grab a fresh copy for yourself. You'll certainly be glad you did!

Insightful
This is by far my favorite book on astrology. It is a great foundational book for those who are interested in astrology. It covers all of the basics in detail so you get a lot of information but it is written in a very straightforward and easy to read writing style. I refer to it often.

Nice introductory material
She has an easy-breezy style of writing, which is combined with factual information of astrology. Before you know, the book is over and you have grasped the basics. I thought the description of planets and signs were too brief though.

Excelente compendio
