The Shure A96F transformer connects microphones with an XLR-type connector to the 3.5 mm inputs found on camcorders and other recording devices. It increases the signal level from the microphone, provides a balanced input, and prevents distortion due to the DC bias voltage typically found in camcorder microphone inputs. The A96F can be modified for microphones rated at 150 ohms. This modification is only necessary if the output level from the A96F is insufficient for your recording device. It features a female XLR connector on the microphone end and .6 meter (2 ft) cable with 3.5 mm phono plug on the recorder end.

Record Live Music to Computer Sound Card
I visited the Shure website, searched their FAQ's, and found one specific to my situation. All I wanted to do was record live music to my computer through the sound card. There was a question that exactly matched my requirements and the answer was this transformer/interface. This allows me to use a boom-mounted microphone and hook the XLR cable to my computer. Right now I'm using the 'sound recorder' in Windows XP, but my next computer, presently in the works, will have a sound card and more sophisticated recording software.

Something off in the specs
I like the build of this, looks like it will last a long time. However, it has a deadly flaw for me. The 1/8" mini plug does not fully seat in multiple pieces of equipment, cameras, etc. It looks fine, but always wants to pop out. These are standard 1/8" inputs on several devices, so I can't understand where Shure is getting their supply of mini plugs that seem to be out of spec. I had to return it. There are other options that work as advertised.

This adapter broke before I even used it.
Mine broke before I even started using it - the cable part of the adapter. I am not happy but I need the device so I'm going to try to repair it myself. Someone else mentioned that the build quality is not good but I thought, well, I need it - how bad can it be? In my case, at least, bad. I did not want the hassle of shipping it back, then being sent another which probably has the same basic design flaw.

don't get your hopes up...
I thought this product was a cheaper alternative to the other options for converting XLR to 3.5mm, despite the fact that it does work. It is extremely easy to break (the wire that connects the 3.5mm to the XLR plug) commonly comes apart, then one needs to resoder. If you are a person who has a cam with a 3.5mm jack and looking for an XLR adapter. As far as $$$ goes; your better off going with the beachtek DXA4.

connects camcorders, laptops, etc. to XLR mics
Connecting a good mic to a camcorder or laptop (or some handheld recorders) can be clumsy. This little doohickey makes it simple. It's only 2ft long, but it's easy to extend with extra cables and adapters (try your local Radio Shack). Use a boom and you're good to go.

Poorly made
Very poor value for money. Worked well for a few days and then stopped working

From a brand that is known for quality, this is shocking!
The wire that goes to the 3.5 mm adaptor is held in place by a single solder, nothing more. There appears to be a missing bolt that should be in threaded hole to secure the wire, but there is nothing in the manuals to indicate what this is for however. Strange indeed, and now being retuned.

Great product, but should be a cheaper
I was so happy that I was now able to use my Shure SM58 with my Camcorder. I ordered one at first to check it out.. It worked beautifully, nice solid sound quality. I bought a second for my second camcorder. I am very happy with the product. Only complaint is that the price is almost the same as the microphone. It should be around $49. But I guess I am willing to pay for the upgrade in sound quality when I compare my new sound to the sound of the recording using the mic on the camcorder.
