Great for Solar Photography
I bought two of these for the total eclipse on April 8, 2024, because my husband was worried that the viewing glasses he bought wouldn't be enough. The lenses, thankfully, showed up just before we left for our trip (Also bought goggles to put the lenses in, but they didn't arrive in time). The first picture was taken about 15-20 minutes after it started (30x zoom), while the second was closer to totality (1x zoom). I don't weld (not since high school), but I will keep these for when I need to view another solar event.

Durable
Actually bought this to watch the eclipse. Worked great, even took pictures using the lens. It was dropped a couple times and did not break or chip.

it actually is a 14 shade and allows clear lines when looking at the solar eclipse, a 12 is blurry.
Was glass and actually a 14 shade.

Worked perfectly for viewing Eclipse
This is genuine Phillips-Optics Shade 14 Welders Glass complete with manufacture date and verifiable Batch production Number. The glass worked perfectly for viewing the eclipse and it completely blocked out all vision and light - until looking directly at the Sun.NASA states that Shade 14 offers sufficient protection without issue.More importantly, three days post Eclipse and no eye issues at all. Obviously the Glass did its' job.

NOT FOR SOLAR OBSERVATION!
I ordered this lens for the eclipse and later for welding while wearing a respirator. I tried it out by looking at the sun when it was late afternoon. DO NOT USE THIS FOR SOLAR OBSERVATION. I tried it for 30 seconds. It does block most of the light, but I noticed immediately that I could distinguish the sky from the trees (the trees and ground were black, and the sky faintly visible) through the lens, which I could not do with the cardboard eclipse glasses we just got. A few minutes later, my eyes started to hurt. I had all the symptoms of arc eye for the rest of the day.I have not used it for welding yet, but I assume it should work for this purpose. Given that NASA itself says that shade 14 is fine for solar observation, that makes me wonder if these are actually what they advertise. I'm going to compare it to other lenses that we have at the shop and update this review when I'm done. I just wanted to get it up here as soon as possible so nobody injures their eyes using this for the wrong purpose.

Perfect for eclipse viewing!
Easily upgrade any standard welding goggles for viewing the eclipse coming up in August 2017 (or the next one in 2019). This lens is dark enough to allow you to stare directly at the sun for an extended period of time without frying your retinas. It does not offer any magnification, however, so the disk of the sun will be too small to see sunspots, flares or any other details.
