A fairly good research into supporting actors
Although an interesting read, it lacked a lot of detail. It should have had more detail about the films they appeared in.

Fascinating Biographies of Supporting Players
If you are the kind of person who loves to watch old films and can't bring to mind the name of the person standing just behind the star, then this book is for you!It contains 65 mini biographies of everyone who was anyone in that wonderully rich cast of supporting players that Hollywood had in such abundance in the 30's, 40's and 50's. The book is well written by Rupert Alistair whose love of the subject shines through. A fascinating and entertaining read.

Character actors of the Golden Age
Fascinating and well researched history of 65 character actors and actresses , popular in the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s. Written with panache and honesty by the excellent Rupert Alistair who shares his love for these performers with the reader. The subjects range alphabetically from Judith Anderson to Dame May Whitty. Once you start to read, you cannot put this book down.

A Must For The Classic Movie Fan
I hope the author, Rupert Alistair, doesn't mind that I've posted a picture of the first page of his five and a half page "Forward" to this wonderful compendium of classic character actors from Hollywood's Golden Age of Film (and Television from the 50's - 70's). I did this because it pretty much encapsulates his (and my) passion for the "love of the oft unheralded working character actor" and I assume it describes the impetus for sharing his comprehensive research with other movie fans (classic or otherwise).Well presented and easily digestible profiles of 65 actors are what you get in this fun and interesting book and I found it enjoyable as soon as it was opened upon its delivery today. Mr. Alistair loads this "must have in your Hollywood book collection" with standard form information of each of his subjects (year and place born, partial filmography, etc) along with bits of specific information you probably have not heard yet; e.g., Do you you know which famous actress got George Sanders into acting? :)I will for sure have this book at the ready the next time I come across one of these "Fabulous Faces" when they pop up in a movie (most likely on TCM) and use it to either get more details on those who I already know or put that elusive name to a face of an actor who I've seen over and over and love their performances but never could remember (or bothered to) look up who they are....looking at you Una O'Connor! :)Also, Mr Alistair alludes to names, films and memoir titles of some of his subjects that will keep you busy should you want to thread out on your own for further research - this includes a rich bibliography of books, articles and websites in the back of the book.Grab this one for your film library. I suspect my visiting film enthusiast/actor friends will be looking at this one first and often. I know I will.

An interesting read before going to sleep. I thought the stories of some of the actors featured were a bit light on in content but it is a harmless light hearted read.
