This quirky simply illustrated picture book will make for a fantastic read aloud that kids will love
A tale of rules, hierarchy, thievery, cruelty, violence and most importantly: cheese. Who is entitled to the cheese? Why can’t we all just get along and share the cheese?? I thought the cheese just stood alone?? This quirky simply illustrated picture book will make for a fantastic read aloud that kids will love.

Great book ! Cooperation is the best tactics during the fight for limited resources (Hobbesian trap)
It teaches the cooperation is the best tactics during the fight for limited resources (Hobbesian trap). As young readers learn to read this book, later in life they will realize that people, unlike rats, can produce cheese ending the limited resource. Accumulated knowledge and cooperation are much needed today.

This is rat law!
You don't have to love rats - or even like them - to enjoy this read aloud romp. This cumulative tale just begs to be performed, and is a perfect illustration of survival of the fittest. Or is it? It turns out that a happy rat is a rat who shares with his friends, whether they are dirty rats, scary rats, hairy rats, or even a gang of dirty, hairy, and scary rats. When you throw in a boss rat, the mayhem really kicks into high gear! This is a perfect story time read, and an excellent choice for those preschoolers who like their picture books to be a bit edgy... boys, I'm talking to you.The cheese is a photo of a real hunk of cheese and it is surrounded by a cast of rats done in red that dazzle in all their long tailed, sharp clawed glory. This is a fun way to convey a great message about sharing, and the expressive and even charming cast of rats will guarantee lots of repeat readings.Take a chance on this unique explanation of rat law and you won't be disappointed. I loved the big two page spread with the rats all beating each other up to get the cheese. The final scene depicting all the rats sitting together at a big table and sharing the cheese is a pretty sweet ending to book that is pure and total fun.

I'm sad to say this story is weak
I'm sad to say this story is weak. I love children's books. I am a preschool teacher. And have six kids of my own. I have read to children, most seriously, about 2 straight years worth of my life so far. There is not much to work with in this book. Great illustrator though! Hope I see more of their work. But the story? Meh.

Rat Law as it applies to kids. Love it!
My son loved the humor, loved the illustrations, and loved rat law. As a kid, he didn't think it was predictable at all and wanted to read it over and over again. It's funny enough for an adult to enjoy reading again and again, too.

Odd, yes, weird, yes, creepy, a little, but realistic? Alas, yes.
Artwork: weird. Storyline: weird. Action: weird. Ending: weird. This is really a love-it-or-hate it book; no wishy washy pastels & morals here. Although not as harsh as Klassen's award winning "This Is Not My Hat", life is harsh in rat world. Not quite rat-eat-rat but definitely a big hierarchy on who gets the cheese. Who Gets the Cheese? Kind of a universal theme, huh? So Deacon deals with it realistically. The biggest and strongest rat gets the cheese. Too harsh to deal with? Maybe. But I thought "This Is Not My Hat" was too harsh to deal with and it won the Caldecott. I'm sure there are some cynical three year olds out there who are going to think this is juuuuussst right.

Good: I couldn't resist the urge to read this ...
Good: I couldn't resist the urge to read this book in a Russian accent. It seemed to fit the theme and grammar of the book. Also, my daughter requested the book over and over.Bad: The theme of this book is pretty nakedly "You get what you can take" There is a sort of addendum that tries to negate this theme. But two pages don't negate the other twenty of successively stronger rats taking the cheese from weaker rats.

Acquistone

Prestige cheese flavoured picture book.
An acquIntance exclaimed in horror when she first encountered this book, for there is a 'reality' in the depiction of the red-eyed, scavenging, collegial nature of the characters that is rare in children's books. Alexia Deacon is unique in avoiding saccharin interpretations of animals and children's characters, without repelling. He draws in the reader with a directness, that the story telling, through empathic pictures, does the work. Superb and special.
