True Beauty

I learned so much from this book
I hadn't actually read the version available on AFF, but I decided to purchase a copy anyways since I'm all for supporting new authors! I had high expectations going in because of the number of subscribers on AFF, and this book didn't fail any of my expectations. What I had initially been expecting to be some sappy romance about a girl saving a slave ended up being so, so much more. There are so many lessons taught in this book that aren't blatantly in your face, but enough for you to realize it. I think the author does a very good job of getting the reader to question their own views on life. To be honest when I first read True Beauty I thought Hana was too perfect to be real, but then all this stuff was thrown in and I was like wow, you really can't judge a book by its cover. The characters other than the main touched me right in the feels, and I became so devastatingly in love with them. I highly recommend that you order a copy, because there's no way you can finish the book without reflecting on yourself for even a second.

The Real True Beauty
True Beauty is a painfully honest account of society and the world we live in. Throughout the novel, there are many heartbreaking tales of injustice and cruelty, but it was not written to make people feel sorry for themselves or others. It serves as a personal experience of the darkness of humanity, and allows for us to push past the pain with the characters and learn to discover the light of true beauty for ourselves. For true beauty is not what you see on the surface, but rather what you do and feel underneath it. The characters were not the only ones who needed this enlightenment, but we need it as well. My eyes have truly been opened.

Just not my cup of tea
To be quite honest, I couldn't finish the book. I went into it expecting something compelling, unique and riveting, considering 'slavery' is, for the lack of a better word, an overused theme, but it was that of the opposite. I couldn't connect with the characters or feel a sense of compassion for the typical background of a 'perfect' overworked teen who would climb mountains to change the world and become a 'hero' in the end. She has that sense of self-loathing and self-deprecating air about her that turned me off. perhaps if I read to the very end my views of her would change, along with the entirety of the story, but I learned that if reading half of the book becomes a chore, it's something that should be either shelved or passed down to another who might enjoy it more than I did. Now, don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the lessons that were brought up and the author's attempt to inspire the reader to look beyond the brooding mask that hides away the goodness in people, but I guess it just wasn't for me.Hopefully my little cousin will like it.
