Dust of Dreams: Book Nine of The Malazan Book of the Fallen

For a new book, the cover is ill-treated. It's almost second hand, definitely not worth paying the price as a new item.

Ihr Weg nach Kolanse führt sie nach Osten durch das Wasteland, einer gewaltigen, verlassenen Ebene. Tavores Verbündete, die Perish Grey Helms und die Khundryl, bringen sich in Stellung, um sich im Osten mit der Adjunct zu verbünden. Dabei kommen sie dem Königreich Bolkando zu nahe, das eifersüchtig über seine Grenzen wacht. Wird es zu einem Zusammenstoß kommen? Zeitgleich bereiten sich die White Face Barghast auf einen Krieg gegen einen unbekannten Gegner vor. Die Clans sollen sich unter Onos T'oolan vereinen, werden jedoch intern von Eifersucht und Machtgier aufgerieben. Kann Tool seine Stellung als Clansführer halten und seine Krieger in die richtige Richtung lenken? Eine kleine Gruppe K'Chain Che'Malle durchstreift unterdessen begleitet von ihrem menschlichen Destriant das Wasteland auf der Suche nach einem menschlichen Shield Anvil und Mortal Sword. Die drei Auserwählten sollen ihnen helfen, sie vor der Ausrottung zu bewahren. Dann sind da noch die Shake, die immer noch ihre Heimat suchen, die Elder Gods, die sich den nahenden Umsturz zunutze machen wollen, Silchas Ruin, die T'lan Imass, Icarium Lifestealer, und, und, und... All diese Fraktionen und noch unzählige mehr werden im Wasteland früher oder später aufeinander treffen. Können ihre verschiedenen Pläne wirklich Früchte tragen? In DUST OF DREAMS laufen die zahlreichen Handlungsstränge des MALAZAN BOOK OF THE FALLEN langsam aber sicher zusammen. Alte Fragen werden endlich beantwortet (natürlich nicht alle) und alte Bekannte tauchen wieder auf. Erikson hält die Spannung wie immer konstant hoch und er spart auch nicht an überraschenden Wendungen, die niemals vorhersehbar oder unglaubwürdig wirken. Liebgewonnene Figuren haben wieder ihren Auftritt, wobei man wie gewohnt nie wissen kann, wer es schafft und wer nicht. DUST OF DREAMS ist der erste Teil des großen Finales und hat anders als seine Vorgängerbände kein abgeschlossenes Ende, was in einen wirklich gemeinen Cliffhanger mündet. Man kann also nur hoffen, dass der finale Band THE CRIPPLED GOD so schnell wie möglich erscheint. Insgesamt hat mich DUST OF DREAMS rundum begeistert. Fans des MALAZAN BOOK OF THE FALLEN werden den Roman ohnehin verschlingen, Neueinsteiger sollten mit GARDENS OF THE MOON starten. Großartig.

Boyfriend’s favourite books.

I thought this penultimate book would keep me going for a couple of weeks, but ended up storming through it. I think now I know that events are all coming to a head, I simply couldn't read it at a leisurely pace. Damn. And now I am waiting for delivery of The Crippled God. I have to say that this series has impressed me as no other. I hope I was not a lazy reader beforehand, but for the first time in many years (possibly since the Thomas Covenant trilogies) I was forced to run to keep up. I was not spoon-fed, I had to absorb vast amounts of information, and really use my brain cells. The result is that I am awed and delighted. Erikson's vision is vast and complex, his themes intelligent and philosophical, and his characters are fascinating. I did mention to a friend that this was one of the only fantasy authors I had ever read where I got no whiff of misogyny from the author or indeed the story. As a woman I felt comfortable reading it, not as if I was looking into a 'Man's world' from the outside, and realizing that if I were in that world I'd have to be a 'breeder' or the 'exceptional' and usually token 'kick-ass' female to live in it. Those books I read, but with underlying resentment. Though the world of the Malazan series is violent, and I would not want to visit it, I did not feel that sense of exclusion that many fantasy books evoke. I am more than pleased that Erikson has continued to write, and Ian Esselmont has books set within the world of TMBotF. I think this is the outstanding fantasy series of all time, and am completely immersed in it.
