A mature, classy and somehow even more ruvid Mel Gibson, in a smart and brilliant crime noir under the sun
Mel Gibson is back, more mature, hurt and failed, cinical and apparently detached from emotions and drama, but still a cosmic avenger that now is even smarter and less out of control than before. This film, whose british title (the american one was quite common) is enough itself to give it 4 stars, is a cool, realistic and at the same time very playful south of the border crime noir under the sun. Mel is getting older (like his partner used to say in Lethal Weapon) and wiser, but not less lethal. He almost refused any belonging to his homeland and now he is a rejected outsider hiding and convicted in mexico, where people, ad they say, are not more outlaw than the yankees, but certainly less hypocritical and puritan. And here is where you can find the deep value and keaning of this film: a total opposition to current hollywood spand american standard, replaced by a will for survival that Mel embodies from beginning to end, showing all his experienced and skilled talent in getting in amd out of trouble without showing off, but with the wise and even more effective ability of an illusionist, an almost invisible guy who sneaks in and out of the scene, steal your wallet or blow up your house, saving energy and almost effortessly, and you don't even notice him. And that is what I call style

What an opener
Good film. But for me its all about the opening sequence. Its the best opening 5 minutes to a film I've seen in years. A proper car chase set in stunning scenery with the bad guys dressed as clowns. And then there's the music. Whoever picked Ten Years After '50000 Miles Beneath My Brain' as the backing track is a genius. What an inspired choice of music. The action and the music have been edited together seamlessly. And the climax of the chase coincides magnificently with one of Alvin Lee's dazzling, one hundred notes a second, guitar breaks. It gave me goose-bumps from head to toe. Its cinematic perfection is what it is. I was thinking how can the rest of the film maintain this level of brilliance. Sadly, it doesn't. But then no film could. The rest of the film is good but not great. Gibson gives a fairly reasonable performance. And its an okay story. But that superb opening 5 minutes will stay with me forever.

Mel at his best
Saw the last 40 minutes of this on TV whilst recovering from COVID-19 . Thought it would be worth seeing in full. So glad I ordered it. Mel Gibson has never been better. Great humour. Hilarious at times. Great action. Relationship with the young lad is really touching. Highly recommended

Way to go Gibson!!!
How I spent my summer vacation (Get the Gringo).Bought this film from Amazon, and well, it's a cracker! Set in a Mexican jail with a brooding Gibson as the leading man the film starts fast and interesting and just gets better. Basic premise is a bad guy (anti-hero) has to lose everything to win (a sorta Midnight Express meets Payback). Cannot believe this went straight to DVD! The lightweights at Hollywood have got to be mad! This is a class film, well acted and filmed. Good stunts a plenty, well played out fight scenes, snappy dialogue and has the only actor in the world who could pull this off with anything near authenticity - including the Clint Eastwood impersonation!Like Mel Gibson or hate him, you can't deny this film showcases his awesome talent and so if you buy it you won't be disappointed.Hope he makes more of these, I won't be swayed by the PC paranoid media machine, as far as I'm concerned he's being punished for being human, but ultimately it's the fee paying public that are being punished because a film of this calibre (and lets face it they are few and far between) are not making the rounds of the cinemas - So Hollywood, be careful what you wish for!

back to payback
In what maybe classed as a slump in fans eyes the last few movies from Mel have been less than great however if you want that classic Mel is upset and gonna get his money back kinda film then click on add to basket. I was surprised that the film had gone back to that tried and tested formula of the classic Gibson films although this does feel like one of the Death proof,Planet terror B'movies at times which only supports it further.Go on give it a watch as Mel wants his money back...

Unexpected storyline.
So much better than I anticipated. It was refreshing to see the prison scene set in Mexico rather than the USA as this somehow felt more intriguing and different, with more scope for drama. The storyline is unexpected which gives the film a depth alongside the well-executed action scenes.Good acting from all the characters in the film. An interesting view of how inter-border police cooperation works.

A return to form.
This film i think is a success for Mel Gibson , it has proved he is back on form. The character he plays is similar to his 1999 role in Payback which is probably my most favourite film of his. This film is original with a cast of people who are probably mostly unknown in Britain. Although i did recognise three characters who were in the film Man on Fire starring Denzil Washington. The film has some humour and violence, but its not over the top. I bought this film thinking it maybe poor but it proved to be very good.
