VOLUNTEERS 180grm REMASTER VINYL - A TRUE GEM
I still remember coming home from College in New Zealand (1969) and finding a package from RCA Victor Record Club on my bed. Does anyone remember Record Clubs - RCA was one of the best back in the day, buy 3 LPs and choose the fourth one free (from their monthly booklet). It was great while it lasted. In the package was Volunteers by Jefferson Airplane. Following hard on the heels of their last album Crown Of Creation with amazing tracks including Lather, Triad, the title track and Ice Cream Phoenix, Volunteers was where I feel Jefferson Airplane reached the pinnacle of their studio recordings The fold-out cover with its bold Bondoni Bold typeface screaming loud and proud VOLUNTEERS it made a statement all its own. I have read that the late Marty Balin conceived the idea for the song Volunteers while peering out of a window and seeing garbage collectors loading their bins into the trucks....Volunteers of America ...came his line. And what a great track it is - all encompassing as are a few of the tracks on this album including the lead-off track We Can Be Together. This is followed by Jorma Kaukonen's take on Good Shepherd. It is a wonder of a track. His cool vocal, acoustic picking and wah-wah formed lead break, it demands rpt play immediately. One of Grace Slick's greatest ever tracks follows in the form of Hey Frederick. It is a mind-blower with its unreal lyrics...."On wide wheels, the four-stroke man.." etc. It is a classic JA song. Wooden Ships begins side two and the clarity of this 180grm remaster even includes the crisp sound of the sails breaking in the wind of this track warning of the remnants of nuclear war. Jack Cassady's bass work lays the foundation for Eskimo Blue Day with once again Ms Slick leading the charge with her bold, vibrato-filled vocal. A cool, change of pace comes via the humorous A Song For All Seasons before an instrumental organ-filled interlude prior to the charge of Volunteers. This album is pure JA power. This band never loses its appeal to me and I often play from their extensive catalouge. From JA to Hot Tuna to solo albums, yes I love Jefferson Airplane. This album is a pinnacle gem. Footnote: I belong to Jorma Kaukonen's Fur Peace Ranch website and last year I purchased a T Shirt but my credit card from Australia did not seem to go through. On Sunday morning I received a phone call from Vanessa Kaukonen (Jorma's wife) informing me that sometimes their system does not take some credit cards. So i relayed my number over the phone and YES all done. For my trouble Vanessa kindly offered to send me a free signed copy of Jorma's biography...YES PLEASE. How amazing was that. Just goes to show, sometimes your idols do actually care about their fans.
