It is 6 1/4" long. The string is not as long as in the picture, you cannot loop it through, but it can be replaced.

What material is the cylinder made of? Could it also be used to "bang a tank" if the rattle function fails?

This shaker is made from anodized aluminum. It can be used to bang your tank in an emergency but you might scratch or dent your rattler.
