Pound them in until there is maybe 1/4 inch exposed. It will be much easier then to put them into the other pieces and you won't end up with the peg dowel preventing it from being flush - and you won't have to pound on the furniture then - which would probably dent. Bottom line, this is a great product for the PRICE! It was very easy to build and very sturdy. It is holding an ancient 32 inch TV that ways at least 50 pounds and it shows no signs of being strained. However, be warned that the packaging box is not very well thought out. Very flimsy and seems to offer no protection to the product inside. One of the wood panels was dented from what I imagine being dropped but nothing too major. I can hardly tell after I put it together.
