It kinds of smells like Pepto Bismol. After dumping I just flush with a 50/50 bleach water solution and it's as good as new. It didn't feel gross like I thought it would. Highly recommend this unit. Looking forward to next camping trip with our angledrop camper, I built an L shaped bracket that fits into the sprayer nozzle recess in the green compartment that now holds toilet paper very well ( see pic) also drilled a finger hole into that same green lid to hold the nozzle on the sprayer and helps open the compartment better. I used a step bit that matched the contour of the nozzle for that operation.
